I wouldn't even pull that one way for that rate. One way to MI I would be looking for $2.50 to the truck.

Feel like I just got beat up...It's not easy being a dispatcher!
Hey, thanks to all for the input and I will keep your words in mind...But I gotta be straight here as I ask and expect of the community: I hit $2.50+/mi.,too.
But $3/mi off the board is gonna be in specialized...I do legal loads only.

    One way: $7800/2200mi = $3.55/mi
    Come on...How realistic is that?

One way would be roughly 2300 miles...$7500. That's more than $2.50/mile. $7500 one way To the truck is what I was basing the rate on...not the broker's end

    MHC Thanks this.

I know just how bad load board freight can be. I don't know what thought processes go into how you look for and pick freight. How hands on and active are the drivers? Do they just want to roll for a rate and toss it all in your lap to make it happen? I don't pull flats but find it hard to believe avg $2.50+ or better to the truck on all miles turned would be impossible for someone with flat experience who knows what to look for in freight. Not trying to beat you up just trying to figure out the thought processes in how freight is looked at and booked. This is the "van" part of me saying why does anyone waste time on these 2,000+ longhauls, understand that flats are much easier to get respectable rates longhaul although that mostly seems to be guys leased on at Landstar where there is obviously much better freight. Loadboard stuff for flats I'm sure the brokers act like anything close to $2.00 mile and you're killing them? Or $2.25 for OS or OD you paying permits out of that is awesome.. If you have a bunch of owners who tell you "I don't like shorthauls, I don't care for that, or this" you've got a bunch of "business" people not thinking and doing what they need to. So if they are griping about low rates what are they and you doing to fix the situation besides same ol, same ol. $1.78 on anything sucks I don't care if it's van or flat at 10,000 miles.

you did fine, some people get too focused on $/mile. It's only one factor, what we really care about is net $ / year or week. This run is going to be a hard week or more likely 10 days but it has some big pluses in that it is 4375 miles with only three stops and no deadheading. I figure my expenses at $1/mile so for me it would be $7800 gross - $4375 expense = $3425 net. If I figure that on 10 days it's 342.50/day or $2397.50/wk. Anytime, I'm over $2000/wk net I'm pretty happy. You would have to put together a pretty good bunch of $6/mile short hauls or $3/mile medium hauls to do the same.

But when you run more miles for less money per mile you are netting less.

exactly why you need to factor in TIME !

say you run three short hauls for a total of 500 miles for $6/mile one week and I run 3500 miles for $2/mile. who netted more ? let's say our expenses are the same, $1/mile. you make $3000 gross - $500 expenses = $2500. I make $7000 gross - $3500 expenses = $3500. In this example you netted more per mile. I netted more per week.
