Ahhhh yes but you are forgetting the biggest factor my friend. That is fuel consumption. Running big miles fuel is about 40 percent of my cost. When I run less miles I am down around 32 percent. So less miles more money not more miles more money.Semi Crazy, Les2, MHC and 2 others Thank this.

dannythetrucker hit the nail right on the head...
The drivers I work with are independent O/Os---Not leased on, not on a dedicated contract. So they run off the load boards.
Neither the driver nor myself can't help but look at $/mi, but it's not an accurate measure of the receivables required to sustain equipment or turn a profit...
It's all about "weeks, months, quarters, the year". I shoot for $20K/mth gross and use $5k/wk as a guidepost. Sometimes it's hamburger, sometimes it's steak...But I'm ranging between $19k-$25k /trk/mth (10-12.5k mi/mth). That pans out between $228k and $300k/trk/yr.
Obviously, my clients are not "weekdayers"...They're OTR drivers intent on their independence.
Yes, i know. Dispatchers get kicked around by drivers, especially dispatch service providers such as myself. But my proudest achievement as a dispatcher is having done a client well enough to enable him to pay off his truck & trailer in 8 months.
I fish hard for legal loads considering "weight & rate" and what's available near the destination...The run discussed in this thread: A 30k lbs strap-n-go, 10k lbs on the return for $7800, 4375 miles---7 drive days total, fits real snug in my fish filter.
The notion that an independent O/O would pass on this load, not move it for less than $3/mi, or only take it one way for $7800, I find incredulous. It's not that I don't trust the sincerity of such, I just don't believe it...Here's why: $3(4375 mi)= $13,125 round trip; and, $7800/2188 mi = $3.56/mi one way. These rates for those miles don't exist in the sphere of legal loads. Unless, of course, the run is: $450/125 mi = $3.60/mi.Civilservant and fland Thank this. -
Indeed. But 30k lbs loaded allows good fuel mileage, and 10k lbs on the return provides even greater.
Civilservant Thanks this. -
Seven years ago I ran Atlanta to L.A. weekly. Approximately 4400 miles plus dead head. It paid $8700 back then.

Couldn't the container be taken to a container yard in Detroit or Chicago? Seems funny to me that the container would be sent back empty all the way to California.
dannythetrucker....you are putting more where and tear on your truck though then Oscar is. You have to figure that in when talking net profit. I figure wear and tear at .05 cents per mile. you are running 3000 more miles then oscar is and that adds $150.00 to your expenses. I would much rather work 500 miles for $2500 then 3500 miles for $3500Civilservant Thanks this. -
.
I would think that alot would. There are very credible people who are leased, pulling legal, and playing in the ball park of that rate and if not better. Therefore if you are gonna go full blown independent and take on the added responsibility that goes along with it, one would think you should pull for a higher rate? Kinda like more risk = more reward?
Now I dont have a horse in this race yet. Still reading and learning as much as I can for when i make a move. Just trying to spark some friendly debate. -
1.78 per mile with a container on a flatbed actually isn't a very good rate. Fuel mileage would drop around 1 mpg costing more to operate the truck. 1.78 per mile might be just fine for vans, but not for open deck equipment.
-
You are to focused on the miles, and that is one of the reasons that freight gets moved cheaper than it needs to be. If I can't clear atleast $500 a day for every day that me and my truck are on the road, then I will stay at home.
-
I would like to know how you figure your expenses are only $1 a mile. Even if you are leased to a carrier pulling their trailer rent free it has to be higher than that.
