I need to know if trucking companies will look into my military career through there background check, I served 31 months and got a general under honorable conditions discharge for smoking pot. It was horrible, I should never of done it, but now I have to move forward. This was over three years ago.

If they use a background check company then it's very possible. Your record if discharge is public but it should only say the condition of discharge. I am not 100% though. But it may not say why you got the discharge you received.

They might ask about why you got a general discharge. They won't know what it was for. You better have a good cover story. Most companies will frown on past drug use. However if you are honest about it and sincere, they might give you a chance.

All the companies I've applied for have asked about military experience, and some have asked for a copy of my DD214. I would assume since you have Under Honorable vs OTH, shouldn't be as tough. What does it say for your characterization code?
-
I wouldnt mention it. Just say you were discharged, If they ask say it was personal, don't give out information. I don't think the military can say why but a general discharge is a general.
A prospective employer rarely challenges a general discharge under honorable conditions. The discharge is not an albatross and there's typically no stigma attached to it. General discharges could convert to honorable discharges if the return to civilian life encourages formation of a stellar citizen.

RE-4 but is still honorable condition
-
Yea the DD214 has multiple copies with certain parts redacted on certain copies. They are all official. But if you bring in a redacted copy they are going to ask what was there.

Characterization code (ie. Involun Sep, non-retention, etc). Not reenlistment code.

I believe it was involuntary separation, and it also said drug abuse, however Im going to go for an upgrade
-
Its pretty rare that the VA or Army/Naval Board of Corrections will upgrade a discharge. However, I have personally seen people who got OTH's from the Marines for drugs enlist in the National Guard with a waiver and get out with an Honorable and a RE-1. Since the NG is a state run organization, your waiver only has to go to the CG in the state.
