northstar. mirage, galaxy, and sommerkamp are the same radios made under different name plates. except for a minor difference in appearance, they are, for the most part, all the same.

 

i had a ns3000 for about 15 years.it had a major overhaul @ the factory 9yrs ago and started acting up again last year so i swapped it for labor on my old cobra29 ltd.bigger finals,connex board and talk back.100$ total.i miss the ole 3000 but the cobra's nice too.that 3000 was the sh-t when i first got it back in 98.i could talk skip from fla to maine,mo. to either coast.today i got a magnum s-6.think its like the old galaxy 9000.we'll see.so far im liking it

 

Not really. The Northstar was Wireless Marketing, Home of the Cherokee line. Defunct and likely bought out by the Mr Ping group you mentioned though. The Synthesizer is controlled by a Pic micro clocking at 8 MHZ. My problem is they never released code and set the protect fuse upon programming the chip. It breakee you no fixee. Luckily it virtually never fails, only when you get one a tech over his head crossed things and zapped it. Most often the failure is a dark display and no brains. The cure is to replace the crystal in 99 of 100 cases. I like to use the carrier osc crystal from a dead 148 Gtl as they are common. Of course not exactly 8 MHZ but who cares. No one can change channels fast enough to tell any difference, as long as your close to 8 MHZ it all works perfectly. Dumbtards in MFG used a glue in the area which corrodes and eats the crystal feet flush and I mean flush. No soldering this one. Pull the old dead feet and clean the board, installing a new crystal. Also used a dual gate mosfet for the RX front end which goes with a dry windy day. Static sensitive. While most techs are smart enough to just replace it with a 2SC1674 few do the rest. Remove the blue wire, pull the upside down LM325 off the board (and the board itself). Put the 324 by itself back where the board mounted, just as it is in any Connex or Galaxy chassis. Good to go then after a slight realignment of the front end cans.
