8 hour line 2 at a receiver or shipper has saved my A more times than I can count. They don't even teach 8/2 in school. A ridiculous oversight.
Im on a 34 right now. If you get the miles you need them. My delivery isn't until Monday so I'd get the same weekend miles regardless (1600) but now I'll have a fresh 70 to keep moving rather than limping on 7-9 hrs for the next few days.

Keep in mind that the dot could give you problems for only 5 minutes on everything. If all you ever show is 5 they know a proper pti is more than 5 and can ask you to show them how you do it so fast. It's your own risk. I make plenty good $ and do 10 to 12 minute pti and fuel. Don't run out of hours either. Make a dollar extra or risk a fight with the dot.

I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but i got a level 1 in CA and caught no flack for it. it always helps to have a clean, well kept tractor, too. I log fuel as it happens, because i dont get in the tractor to change status, and i log 15 at shippers and receivers.
Arkansas Frost Thanks this. -
i go line 2 and do my post trip i dont mess with line 4 for 15 minutes and have never had anyone say anythign about it

if safety catches that they will edit in a 15 minute post, which could give you days of retroactive violations. I know, it happened to a friend of mine.

Kmttv,
sounds like you should be hireable... But Central will be Leary of the being fired three times in a row. They want people to be squeaky clean if they can get em and they seemed relieved when I told them I quit my last job. Not sure if it would be a deal breaker, but they'll definitely have a lot of questions. I'd get into it in detail with your recruiter and make sure you fin out before ending up in West Valley and then finding out they have a problem, lol. Good luckkmttv12 Thanks this. -
Hours of service are really not that hard, once you learn a few rules.
Basic rules for OTR, not messing with shorter weeks or more local rules.
You can work 70 hours in 8 days.
(that is the rule, but really you can work forever, just cannot drive after out)
You have a 14 hour window when you start your day to preform work. After the 14 is up you cannot drive.
You have 11 hours in that 14 that you can drive. After 11 hours driving in a shift you must stop.
After you are done with your shift you have to take a 10 hour break. After 10 hours you now have a fresh 14 and 11.
That is the main rules. I say shift and not day for a reason.
This is because you can technically work/ drive 14 hours in a day. But you must have a 10 hour break before you can.
Lets say you start your day at midnight.
0000-0015 Onduty Pretrip inspection.
0015-0800 Driving
0800-0810 Onduty Fuel stop
0810-1100 Driving
1100-1105 onduty post trip
1105-2105 Off duty/ sleeper
2105-2120 onduty Pretrip inspect
2120-0000 driving
Ok, that is a perfect day. You had no load or unload time, it was what I call a running day. You are running your butt off to get across the country. I did this to show possible legal driving time.
So to look at it split up. For that day.
45 min Onduty time used for inspections.
10 hours off duty/ sleeper for break.
13 hours 15 min drive time.
So if you average that day at 57 mph, which is pretty average for long haul, you will have driven about 755 miles in that day.
This is a very good shift, everything is going your way. The day can start at any hour. This is why I call it a shift. It may start at noon, and that 24 hour period would go till noon the next day. Does not really matter. As long as you do not drive after your 11/14/70 are up.
On the 8/2 split.
The reason they do not teach this in school is because too many drivers, new and old, screw it up.
If you take the 8 hour break first it can be very helpful. The 8 must be done in the sleeper berth, it cannot be done off duty.
When you do this the 8 hours stops your 14 hour clock. This is the only way to stop your 14, unless you take a 10 hour break.
At the end of your 8 hour break you have stopped your 14. You do not gain any hours. So whatever onduty or drive time you had remaining when you stopped, you still have.
You do not gain any hours till you take a 2 hour break. The 2 hours can be off duty or sleeper, or a mix of the 2.
At the end of the 2 hour break. You will have a new 14 and 11. BUT That 14 and 11 started at the end of the 8 hour sleeper break.
So the 2 WILL count against your new 14.
This is why the split is not as good as a 10 hour break.
It can be helpful to help you make a delivery. At times you will have a delivery that you will be an hour late or something if you take a full 10 hour break. Maybe you stopped short of the shipper/ receiver due to not having parking available at that location, and you are running early. So you take an 8, use the remaining drive time from prior shift to get to shipper/ receiver, then maybe take a 2 while you are getting loaded/ unloaded.
Remember. You are in a reefer, so unload times may take a LONG time.
Hopefully this is not too much information.
I tried to make it as easy as possible. Over time you will get to where you can do all this in your head in a few seconds.Arkansas Frost and vikingswen Thank this. -
Better explanation than I got when I learned it! The two counting against the 14 Along with 4 hrs load/unload threw off my planning a little bit the first time but I just hit a different stop for my ten and left earlier the next day. It saved me on making my appts though.

Hi all. Great explanation crome dome. To the wifi guys, the best place to get centrals wifi is in the classroom at west valley city. Also if you park in the back of the lot you can pickup an unsecured wifi. For the guy with the employment issues, I would be a little iffy, but get all the info to your recruter and avoid the colorful names.
Upgrade got moved to the 16th in Fontana. Will anyone be there?kmttv12 Thanks this. -
It was only 2 jobs, my last one i am still working and planning to do a 2 week notice. I dont know if that matters or not. Thanks for the input.
