Considering OTR drivers are only home a few days a month, for a person who is single with no kids or pets, would having an apartment make sense? Does anyone have any information regarding staying in hotels or camping? If so, what are your experiences? As far as mail, you could use a family members address or a P.O. box. Thanks for any opinions or real life experiences regarding this issue. - Rob S.

I gave up my apartment when I started driving. I have my mail sent to my moms house, and when I go for home time, which is only 3 to 4 times per year I just stay with friends. It makes sense to me and it saves me a lot of money.

If you are running hard I think it is more economical to give it up. This will allow you to save more money. When I first came into the industry I gave up everything. I was able to save a pretty good amount of money.

Thank you two for your replies. I also just found another postie with basically the same question, guess I should have searched a little longer before posting a duplicate question. Although, I will still greatly appreciate any responses. Thanks again. - Rob S.

P.S. As a company driver, can you stay in your truck on your days off? If so, which companies allow that? I am thinking about Schneider; I live close to their terminal.

Schneider doesn't care. You can stay in your truck.

I would put in a few months first before making any permanent living arrangements. You can live solely out on the road if you wish and take time off wherever you want. I would advise that you get a UPS box because they will provide you with an actual address instead of just a post office box. You can actually use this address to put right on your license and no one will ever know the difference. Have done this myself for years and it works just fine.

    Good luck man...

I did the UPS Store thing for several years as well, had the address on my DL, too. Just keep in mind the USPS won't forward mail from there when you're ready to settle down.
