Been over it many times, last time was 92k gross and went to deliver a rail car mover for Disney Productions.

I've been over it one. Was riding shotgun with a buddy of mine. Spent the night at the top of the hill and started down the next morning. Had some mechanical problems along the way. Turns out the illuminated shifter knob wasn't screwed on tight enough, and it fell off about halfway down. He ended up burning himself with the ash off his cheap cigar while trying to screw it back on. Burned a hole right through his sock. Apparently out the brakes weren't very well maintained either, he stepped on the pedal and it went right to the floor! Long story short, there was a low tunnel at the bottom of the hill, scraped the top row of chickens right off, and out the other side we went. Didn't get it stopped until we finally ran into the side of the feed store down in town. Heck of a ride.
JimbobCrow and tracyq144 Thank this. -
every other Sunday night for5 years(first drop Mon in durango--coming off east beach)--fun right--great sights--not as challenging as it used to be since the redesign--just take you time and enjoy the view--Just wondering(haven't been over in year or so) are they still renting snowmobiles at the summit in the winter--that was toooo much fun! LOL

First time was in the summer in a cage, 2004 ( I think) lots of construction, and we went into a lodge-restaurant to have lunch somewhere before the pass. Hot (way over 90F) and lots of waiting for dump trucks to fill up with rocks and dirt on one side, cross the road and empty on the other side.
Next time was 2 years ago, rode bikes headed towards New Mexico in early September. Had snow, hail, sleet, rain and fog at the top. Temp was 37F.
Way foggy so that stopping to take piccvys wasn't an option.
Nice ride, tho.

Had a driver I worked with go down the west slope in about 1977 in a Emeryville (if you don't know what a Emeryville is google "Emeryville Truck" Hit a deer and the front wheel slung it under the cab, took out some wiring, this was at night, he said it got very dark and quiet when the deer pulled enough wires loose to kill the lights and the Jake. Brakes were cool so he was able to stop and wait for daylight to fix the mess.

Emeryville??? OK couldn't help it--According to my Grandad way back when--he graduated me from his B-Model to a newer Emeryville--begged for that B-Model back!! LMAO

About 10 years or so ago hey blocked traffic on Wolf Creek Pass so they could land a ambulance chopper there to pick my brother up when he had a hiking accident.

Just to toss this in, if you ever have a first ride across stop and check out the view. Take a camera also.
