After listening to road dawg the other day I got very interested in this topic "how trainers train the new drivers over the road"
Any trainers here want to share their methods?
( I am not a trainer )
Trainers, what is your method?

I used to train years ago, what part of training do you want to know about?
I made them learn just like I did, from the ground up. Unfortunately driver mills and trucking companies of megga fleets do not do that. -
I heard some trainers train from the sleeper berth, and run it like a team.
My trainer was always in either the drivers seat or the passenger seat. -
trainers should NOT run like a team...i repeat SHOULD not run like a team.,..it should be against the law for a trainer to run team with a trainee....a trainer CAN NOT train someone from the sleeper.....
AfterShock, Raiderfanatic, aiwiron and 3 others Thank this. -
My perspective only, a trainer should teach and make the student do under observation. A sleeper trainer or team driving is not a good way to do anything.

I'll never forget my trainer...Or my first trip....I met him and the truck in Largo....He drove it over the bridge to Tampa and we got loaded...He drove it to the Rest stop on the north side of Tampa....Climbed in the sleeper and said..."Wake me when we get to Atlanta"....
I had never even drove a big truck over an hour before that night....I had NO Trouble Staying Awake That Night.....
He either was the the bravest or the dumbest driver I had ever met....He Had Never Even Seen Me Drive!.... -
Methods, not opinions. Training methods vary with each trainer and their training process (if they have a process) An effective method is to break down the tasks required to drive a truck. Start with the foundation skills, those are skills that are basic and can be built on or added to. Cab familiarization, start up & shut down procedures, engine compartment, driveline, rear of tractor & air hoses. Next, how to get the truck moving and stopped. Shifting and clutching. Driving; entering highway, exiting highway, city driving (all basics) Now we hook up to a trailer and start learning how to drive with a trailer. Starting & stopping, turning, entering and exiting highway or rest area, and safely parking. Now we have a good foundation to teach on. You should get the gist of it, just break it down into tasks.

I like the blindfold & seatbelt method...much safer than the bunk!!

First thing after all the regulations and procedures, know your truck and trailer.

With no reservation I say that trainer was a idiot.
