I have that style on my 00. So dang irritating. I used to always have 3 extra bolts in the truck at all times. Got too good at changing them.I still need to order a new bracket but i noticed on the upper bolt(even when fully tighten) there was a gap on the front side between the front cover at the bracket. I put a thick washer in there and been 2 months and it hasnt broke it. When i was doing the one twice a week.
Also, prolly from previous owner neglect the bolt holes on my front cover got wollowed out. Anybody know detroit charges 100 bucks for the 4 little sleeves to fix that????
. I about passed out in the parts dept at freightliner.

I read about a guy that fabricated a bracket to cure the bolt problems on a detroit he sells them on e-bay

earlier detroits had issues with the cam rollers (being ceramic) and would slowly chew up the cam lobes,my 96 did this and left metal chips on oil pan bolt. And i believe the detroit has a 800,000 mile service life on the bull gear/bearing.ask a detroit service garage about this.200 bucks is a good price for bull gear.

i bought said bracket for $90 on ebay and it cured the problem. It uses the spot where the engine has the eye-let for lifting the motor. And then bolts to the other side of the compressor. Very strong and cheap fix.
this is the same bracket but I got mine for $50 less. It came from a guy in Jacksonville, FL

have them install new hoses/belts when they put it back together.

Got a problem... shop called me this morning. said they cannot find source of metal shavings found on oil plug. they said all the gear train looks real good. bull gear & bearing is in real good shape. I asked about the cam? it is original.it looks good also. I thought as long as the metal has been collecting on the magnetic plug, it would be obvious where the source was. he thought the accessory drive gear had too much play, & maybe that was it. not sure, now for the worst part. turns out the bull gear I bought will not work. I was told it was a ddec3 I ran the part # thru my local freightliner dealer long time ago with my engine ser no & he said yep it is a ddec3 & will fit. the box was sealed, however. the gear in the box is for a ddec 2 & will not work. so I told him if the teeth on the bull gear are good, lets just replace the bull gear bearing. having power steering pump replaced also. I am stumped on this metal & not being able to find a source. my neighbor who at one time had his bull gear replaced, his bearing failed & caused the wobble to break off a few gear teeth, while he saw while changing oil pan gasket. he told me he always doubted it was my bullgear bearing, cause with as much metal as I have gotten off plug, it would have failed by now. almost 2 years. I cannot understand why there is not an APPARENT OBVIOUS place where it is coming from. any way. any thoughts on this? please chime in.

what did an oil analysis show the metal to be?

The accessory drive will leave the shavings you describe. The bearings start to wear, and shavings will peel off. I had the that happen on my '95 11.1, DDEC III. You will find shavings for several oil changes after the accessory drive is replaced. If It has play, that is the problem, and very easy to change.

Thank you.
