Hopefully this will not come off as whining.....
I am currently with a job not in the trucking industry. I've been doing research and looking around for what I want in a trucking job. I found a trucking company who is willing to take me as a recent graduate and train me to drive tanker hauling crude oil (and no, it's not SNI). I'll be making way more money than I am currently. I was offered the job last Thursday contingent on me passing the HazMat (which I did yesterday with a 93 :biggrin_25519:) and showing the receipt proving that I did my background/fingerprinting (which I have scheduled for this Friday). I have not put in my 2 week notice yet with my current job. Today, I'm being told that there is no guarantee that I'll be able to keep the spot because they have a bunch of people coming in this Thursday to interview. They want me to hurry up and get the drug test and physical done this week, do the fingerprinting, and start this week or on Monday. I appreciate the fact that they are willing to take me but I'm used to giving a 2 week notice. I've never just quit a job. Maybe it's a no brainer but I've never left a job on bad terms. What do you guys think? :biggrin_25520:

Your new Job/Boss is your Job/Boss , if they personally request you come immediately I would do so without question. Trucking is a slippery slope once a company finds out you are leaving a great deal many horrors can occur. Wave goodbye and say you appologize if you must but business is business and you have to take care of number one.

Frankly, I wouldn't / don't trust anyone that won't allow me to do the right and responsible thing.......simple as that. It says an awful lot about the integrity and professionalism of your prospective employer.
Ask yourself this......when the time comes for your prospective employer to do the right and honorable thing by you, what do you think the result might be?

Ask your new (potential) employer what's THEIR policy, what notice do THEY expect? I'll bet they say at least 2 weeks notice.

There's got to be a training period and a probation period at this trucking company. What if you fail driving skills, or consider this: they can fire you for ANY reason. Also, it may turn out you hate the job, it's not what you expected.

If you walkoff your current job you have burned a bridge. You look for a job in the future and you put this company down as previous employment, what do you think they'll say about you? How does that sound to a potential employer, "he could just walkoff."

I'd ask for a leave of absence...personal business...they don't need to know your personal business that way your not leaving yourself open to no job at all..and if they so no leave of absence then give 2 weeks
