Hello all! I'm newly signed up here but been reading for a good while!

I have applied to Millis Transfer and I am looking to attend MTI on as early as 27AUG2012, I already have my CDL permit and DOT physical so I'm ready to go!

I really hope Millis calls me and I can start this coming monday in Wisconsin. I am 23 years old from Virginia and the closest school is in Georgia but I am willing to go ANYWHERE to train.

I am a veteran and good training and small classes is what I was looking for, I can afford the $500 down but things are going to be tight after that I will eat as cheap as possible until I get on the road with a trainer and start making some money.

Your positive feedback on this company is what has led me here, I have researched and applied to bigger companies. I really want to make Millis home though.

This is what I have ready

DD214 ( the forms I have entering the army, the only thing saying I left is a Certificate of Honorable Discharge)
    Birth Certificate (copy)
DOT physical and Long Form complete 14AUG2012
CDL Permit (hard copy) Completed General Knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicles all completed on 15AUG2012

    Four pair jeans
    Six Shirts
    Hygiene materials
    Calculator
Rain Suit (coleman) top and bottom
    Work Gloves

I need to get a sleeping bag before I go out with a trainer.

I'm sure I have other stuff i'm forgetting to add here. Any advice?

How many normally bunk to a room here?

I want to go out with a trainer as soon as I finish MTI. I really hope to have a small class and learn a lot by having hands on material.

I am studying Pre-Trip the hardest right now, is this a good idea?

How often does the company go out west? (I'm willing to haul anywhere)

What is the policy of taking trucks home for home time (being that i'm from Virginia)

Also, I've never heard anyone mention weighing their load at a CAT scale at the truck stops, is this normal process for Millis. Does the company pay for it, or reimburse you for it.

What's the starting pay out of training ( sure it beats Swift's 0.25 ) I'm not picky though.

Sorry for all the questions! I REALLY appreciate any help I can get.

I hope they get back to me soon!

    Michael

Crete carrier would be another good option for someone just starting out. Pay is flat 650 a week while you ride with a trainer. Paid lodging during orintation, you get your own room, paid rental car to the terminal, they take care of all your transportation while you are in orintation. Thats the way it was when i started anyway. Not sure about millis i applied there and heard back from them. They are going to make you pay for training? You said somthing about 500 down payment. Crete might be a good one if you dont hear from millis. Find a company that will pay you right for your time. Not rip you off for being a student. Oh and crete lets you take your tractor home. I dont work there anymore but they were good to me for three years, buying my own truck now.

i will answer a few. your clothes are ok although you get 5 shirts in irientation after training. i have never used rain gear since the lingest i am out of the truck is to hook or unhook a trailer. while in class you stay at a hotel near the terminal. depending on how many students you may have one roomate or be by yourself in the room. there is a vehicle that you all pile into to get back and forth. and millis will pay to greyhound you there to get started.

yes study pretrip as much as possible to get it memorized. you will go over it in class and out with trainer.

furthest west we go is texas. unless you get the rare run to cali.

as long as you have safe place to park the truck you can bring it home. i dont know how far you live from Eden, NC but we have a terminal there.

we scale loads at cat scales or there is a scale in trenton at the terminal. i usually scale any heavy loads just to be sure. millis will reinburse you for scale tickets.

starting pay really depends on which way you choose. per diem or non perdiem. there is a link to the payscale in one of these threads.

i hope i amswred you. anything else just ask

Welcome Playa, I wish you luck with your app. I know other drivers that live in Virginia and we haul alot in and out of there. Yes, we take our tractors home. It is company policy to scale all loads. Yes Millis pays for it. If you don't hear from them within 2 days I would reccomend calling and checking on the status of your app.

How is a business ripping anyone off for charging something for training? Make your way to any local University or Technical college and tell them that. I don't understand how a "student" is entitled to ANYTHING from a company offering a "training" program. There are not very many oppurtunities out there where you could go for a 3 week training program and pay a small investment coming out making 40k plus your very first year with that company. Yes there are company's out there that will you will pay nothing to go to, but I guarantee you pay for it one way or the other, either similar to how Millis does it or by getting paid less per mile, or I know in Crete's case as you cited those guys complain about not ever getting home or very very little hometime. A person needs to look at what they are willing to give for what they will receive with each company. For me Millis was a great choice, may not be for others /shrug.

Hello all! I'm newly signed up here but been reading for a good while!
Hello and welcome! I'll try my best to answer the best I can. Talking to a recruiter is always the best though, there are some awesome people up there in Black River and will shoot it straight to you!

I have applied to Millis Transfer and I am looking to attend MTI on as early as 27AUG2012, I already have my CDL permit and DOT physical so I'm ready to go!
Just a heads up your DOT physical will need to be less than 60 days old of the date you start class.

I really hope Millis calls me and I can start this coming monday in Wisconsin. I am 23 years old from Virginia and the closest school is in Georgia but I am willing to go ANYWHERE to train.
Wouldn't think going to WI would be a issue to them, you'd need to work out and how it will be paid to go there. Not sure if they would pay for transportation to WI if you live closer to another school.

I am a veteran and good training and small classes is what I was looking for, I can afford the $500 down but things are going to be tight after that I will eat as cheap as possible until I get on the road with a trainer and start making some money.
I'd plan to have more than just the 500 for the 3 weeks of initial training. You will need to cover your meals and any spending money while there for that 3 weeks.

Your positive feedback on this company is what has led me here, I have researched and applied to bigger companies. I really want to make Millis home though.
I couldn't see myself working for any other carrier to be honest, top notch company! It will mostly be about your work history, your location and MVR. I know they look for a solid work history.

This is what I have ready

DD214 ( the forms I have entering the army, the only thing saying I left is a Certificate of Honorable Discharge)
    Birth Certificate (copy)
DOT physical and Long Form complete 14AUG2012
CDL Permit (hard copy) Completed General Knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicles all completed on 15AUG2012

    Four pair jeans
    Six Shirts
    Hygiene materials
    Calculator
Rain Suit (coleman) top and bottom
    Work Gloves

I'd pick up a Rand McNally Laminated Carrier Atlas, 45 bucks on their website ( Way cheaper than buying at a truckstop)
A 6 inch clear ruler as well, you will be using it a lot during training learning how to run paper logs. ( Once in your own truck Millis uses E-Logs)

I need to get a sleeping bag before I go out with a trainer.
Good idea, I picked up one at Walmart for 45 bucks, that was the more expensive, I think they had one for 25 with less degree ratings.

I'm sure I have other stuff i'm forgetting to add here. Any advice?
If accepted, they they will send you a email with a list of things to bring and have with you.

How many normally bunk to a room here?
2 If you went to the Richfield school you'd stay at the Super 8 and depending on other students you could be by yourself in a room or sharing with 1 other. One thing about the hotel is you will have to pay back the hotel cost to Millis, or pay for it upfront. To pay back they just take 10 bucks a check ( or more if you want to pay it back faster ) until it is repaid, there is no interest on it. They do get a decent discount so you don't pay a "normal" room rate when you stay there.

I want to go out with a trainer as soon as I finish MTI. I really hope to have a small class and learn a lot by having hands on material.
They will ask what day you want to leave out with your trainer once completing the 3 week course at the school. You will need to be somewhat flexiable by a day or two as the trainer's are out there on loads too, so depending on freight etc will depend on which day they get routed through to pick you up. There were 2 of us that completed this last class, the other student left yesterday already the day after orientation, I was suppose to leave today but my trainer had a issue with the truck that needed to be fixed so we are leaving out tomorrow. That's kind of what I mean by be a little flexiable about it. There are uncontrolable's when it comes to trucking. If you want a small class all the MTI's classes are way smaller than your mega carriers. I am totally estimating from what I know here but Catersville seems to average more around 15ish per class, Trenton more like 6-8 and Richfield more like 4ish. We started with 3 in Richfield and ended with 2.

I am studying Pre-Trip the hardest right now, is this a good idea
Not a bad idea, you want to know it well when you take your test, if you look confident and knowledgeable it will bode well with the tester.

How often does the company go out west? (I'm willing to haul anywhere)
Not often, once awhile out to southern Cali. and a few others, but it is pretty rare. Millis is mostly Western WI border line straight south down to texas and East from that line. If you wan't to go West a lot you'd probably want to get on with a company who runs a lot of produce with reefers. Millis is dry van hauling a lot of beer and glass loads.

What is the policy of taking trucks home for home time (being that i'm from Virginia?
You'd work that out with your dispatcher, they do allow people to bring trucks on home time there are "rules" etc per say on it so I don't want to say this or that on it.

Also, I've never heard anyone mention weighing their load at a CAT scale at the truck stops, is this normal process for Millis. Does the company pay for it, or reimburse you for it?
Every load is scaled. There are places you need to use that can be paid by comdata or they reimburse if unable to pay with comdata by sending in receipt. You would learn more about this in orientation.

What's the starting pay out of training ( sure it beats Swift's 0.25 ) I'm not picky though.
Per Diem - .30( They actually give really good incentives for going with Per Diem with Millis which I haven't really seen other companies do) Straight pay - .33 http://www.millistransfer.com/driverpay.html The Website seems to be .1 cent less than the current rates it looks like, probably not updated.

Sorry for all the questions! I REALLY appreciate any help I can get
    Hope I could help some.
I hope they get back to me soon!
Usually will take 2 business days for them to get back to you, I believe they run some checks on you before they even call you.

You posted a link and the system put it in moderation and any following post including this one. If that happens please be patient until one of the moderators approve it. Double posting doesn't help. Usually we are pretty quick. Occasionally not all are online. Thanks for understanding!
