Paul, the company always leaves shutting down up to the driver, we all got the same QC message monday I think. It still applies on Tuesday and everyday.
I have shut down for fog, wind, snow, ice, tornadoes. They never argue and there is never a service failure. Make sure your buddy knows this. By the way, snow chains are only for getting to a safe place, not to deliver the load.
So, to answer the original question, freight never comes before safety. It seems the storm moved slower, they might not have been aware, and it is up to the driver to make the decision. I went through on Thursday on I 20 and it was ugly but not requiring a shut down and it seemed the worst of the weather was still to the south.
I had the ability to choose I 20 over I 10. But if it was really bad, I would have shut down. The key is to communicate with ops. -
A team that I know personally had to go through that area and Con-Way allowed them to reroute to avoid any potential problems with the storm. That's all I know about it.

Ok ..let's drop it! All I was saying was why dispatch a driver for a Wednesday 9am pick up in a area (off I-10 below Slidell la) that's being hit with a hurricane ...yea he knew he can call safety and not go in....just why would his FM & or the planner send him..?
-
You asked the question. The answer is no, they never put freight over driver safety.
-
Ok whatever greeneye....the dispatch should not of happened as the area was under a MANDATORY evacuation .....yes it's up to the driver yes he CAN say its not safe ....but why put the trk and driver into a risk in the first place!!
TruckerPete1990 Thanks this. -
Ah, we get to the bottom of it...the dispatch eliminates layover pay if I am not mistaken. If I am, then the dispatch is simply to cover the load. Shut down rules still apply. Always driver decision.
