I have a microwave in the truck and a george forman (small size) grill also. My wife freezes meals from home and I thaw them out and nuke em' when I'm on the road. When I was on the road for 4 to 6 weeks at a time I would stop at a grocery store a couple of times a week and buy fresh veggies (or canned) frozen entrees' and small cuts of meat and make my own meals with the microwave. Canned soups too. Ate healthier and saved a ton of money over the truck stop food. I would treat myself to Popeye's chicken once a week. I use disposable snap top containers, the ones that some lunch meats come packaged in work well, to freeze and reheat my food in. I also eat right out of them and then throw 'em away! Wendy's has the best plastic utinsels. I buy a frosty and then pick up a week's worth of knives, forks, and spoons. When you're done eating they go in the trash also. Nothing to wash. It's not that difficult to eat better food when on the road. It does take a little bit of extra planning but the money you save and the better food you eat is worth it!

Thank you so much for all these posts. It will really help in getting our act together and hopefully be more successful on the road for long periods of time. All these little details will make a huge difference once we hit the road..

a lot of them will tell you about inverters ~ about 180 watts is all the plugs on the dash will take and that is too much actually, resulting in a $180,000 on fire in the middle of the road with FMCSA Officer wanting to interview you .... if you ever use an inverter it should be a $1031.00 tripp-lite with massive cables going direct to a panel and not some "ziggarette lighter" hook-up

the actual size that is needed for safe operation has a lot to do with what you plan to pull with it, tripp-lite .... I like Grainger but several dozen places sell them, just be sure you use the type that has screw-terminals and not the dash-plug style,...350 watt minimum I would think, you have to read the ratings for whatever it is you want to pull

the "Heavy-Duty" at tripp-lite looks like it has no "power-cord" and thus would be battery-only, the other one is "Utility-'Truck Inverter / Charger" ~ has a cord on the front and probably charges battery-pack whenever power is supplied, I strongly recommend Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries but it takes digging to find one big enough, they are used on hybrid autos ......

do-not hook that up to your truck battery unless you are a very skilled mechanic, not a "driveway at the house" mechanic .....

Thanks! One of the companies I'm hoping to work for will install for free if we purchase. So no, not something we will be doing on our own.... We plan for a fridge, microwave, George foreman, tv and lap top. That's pretty much it.

STap: the fridge & microwave probably can be pulled by one of the units but you need to get the G.F. datum for amperage as that is a "resistive load" pulling a heating element ~ heavily promoted items are notorious for several failure modes, not the least of which is just flat fire-ignition .... put that in a sleeper and someone better be good at fire-extinguishing wit da bare hands

come visit or friend or something ...... you can pull the friend later on baseless whim but sounds like you are trying to do similar to what several of us want to do in Eagle Ford Shale ....

So where do I find these handy dandy inverters?? I saw some at Walmart on the shelf but I think they were the type that plug in the cigarrett lighter port... So I bed to look for at least a 12v??
