Hello Drivers,
I first started working for swift way back in 1996, first has a driver for a few years then has a driver manager for about 5 then back on the road again for another 4 years.
And in case your wondering i was doing fine in the office but after awhile i honestly missed being on the road. not to mention with my experience i can make more money driving then in the office. (most junior level office staff don't make as much as you might think). in 06 i decided to try someone else for a while and moved on thru a couple of companies over the next few years and learned a whole lot of the trucking industry in the process. and then after working for a small company with questionable business practices i decided to go back to what i thought was home, swift. well this has turned out to be heartbreaking.
Before i continue i want to make clear i am not posting this to slam swift has a whole, just make this a learning experience for other drivers and maybe even some trucking companies if they care enough to read what drivers have to say about them. So on my return i have found that with a change in leadership at swift the company has changed a lot over the last 5 years and for experienced driver and not for the better. OK swift has always been a training company, that's no secret but that didn't mean that an experienced driver couldn't get by before , but now...
so here is the experience i have found both pros and cons and why i have given my notice and am leaving swift for the last time.
pros: Great equipment, terminals everywhere, medical and dental are very good, the staff for my experience is always friendly toward the driver,a very large client pool to get freight, they have always been really good at getting me home when i was ready, the pay level is not the best but decent.
Cons: OK with all those pros they don't mean anything if the average miles for a driver is under 2000 miles and too often close to 1500. you would think with such a pool of high profile clients that swift would be overflowing with loads, sadly its just not the case.
Swift has always had parameters for there drivers but now there restrictions are choking the drivers to death, it really is over kill. the trucks are set at 62, if you go over 70 the computer will record a excess over speed, 3 of those in a year will get you suspended. swift is electronic logs now, that in itself is not a bad thing at all in my opinion but that in combination with slow trucks makes it almost impossible to make great miles with swift even it the freight WAS there.
swift used to be aggressive with new technology and ways to be better both for there customers and there drivers, i don't see that anymore, its been over five years since the federal govt started passing idling laws and as a major trucking company should have been sensitive to this, and rising fuel prices has had years to prepare yet did nothing.
now instead of driver friendly trucks that keep them comfortable they instead just monitor and(there is no other way to say it) ##### and moan to the drivers to QUIT IDLING THE TRUCKS SO MUCH! yep, that's the only answer that a multi billion dollar company can come up with.
so to recap a bit swift seems to monitor everything from speed to idling to if your sending enough G.O.A.L messages every day. yes it is a requirement that every-time you back up you need to get out of your truck and then send in a goal message on your qualcomm has proof.sadly they keep close watch on everything it seems but drivers pay checks, yes if you go over 70 there going to notice it and let you know really fast and yet if a driver has really low miles and he has pay checks say under 400,00 for weeks no one at swift will ever notice. you think they could monitor low pay and miles along with everything else but they don't.
in conclusion, Swift used to at least treat drivers with some respect and expected them to act in a professional manner and took action if they didn't. now they just seem to treat all drivers the same, like amateurs who need there hand held in every little thing they do.
and i must say the irony is that in the end swift will get what there asking for because they will drive all the experienced drivers who are professionals and just end up with a company full of drivers who actually DO need there hands held through every little thing they do.
OK i hope that my experience is helpful for someone, and with all i have said it is still and OK company to start with, just not for long term anymore.
Take care everyone.
Why i finally had to give up on swift transportation.

I think Billy Joel said it: "You can never go back to the greasers, best you can do is pick up the pieces".
It is a shame that large companies just have it in their business plan that they have a revolving door and they run their company that way.New driver or old doesn't seem to matter. -
in 1997 i quit them under load with no notice and turned in a dirty truck on thanksgiving day!
i got hired at my current job on my day off from swift and made darn sure i lasted a year.
congratulations, hope ypu get a job with no goal stickers.auto trans. or qualcomm -
The complaint about elogs and low miles is something I'm hearing from a number of drivers that come into the mill where I work. Ozark, SNI, USA etc...They are having a hard time making it work for them. The only thing I've seen is that elogs have driven the average pay per week down as the miles go along with it without an increase in cpm.

Heres whats going on with the companies that run elogs, I switched from Knight to Fischer and Knight is Elogs, at my current company they leave it up to the driver to either go elogs or paper logs. I am on paper logs and heres the reason why. At Knight the dispatchers had to find us loads that we could drive 600 miles or less in a ten hour drive time period in a 65 mph truck if you did not idle.
At my current company my dispatcher will try to find me 850 mile runs to 1000 mile runs today and tell me to have it delivered tomorrow! The reason I keep my current company confidential is because I don't know who all reads these posts and I don't want my miles to start going down a week because someone in power finds out that our company runs us semi illegal. The reason why we run semi illegal is because our trucks go as fast as the speed limit allows us to go! So some will say you cant legally run this. If your out west say from Texas to Arizona the average speed limit is 75 mph and you will be left alone if you go 80 mph. 11 hours times 80 mph is 880 miles compared to 600 miles in a 10 hour period in a 65 mile hour truck. Now this is through out the week. On Friday we will get every driver atleast a 1800 mile run and some a 2500 mile pick it up on Friday and deliver it on Monday! Thats more than most other companies will give their drivers in a entire week!
Knights idle policy never idle your truck. My current company policy on idling the truck! If you are in the truck the truck is running to keep the driver comfortable! If you are in the truck stop watching tv in the drivers lounge, showering, getting food, ect. The truck is still running so when you go back to it the truck is comfortable for the driver!
At Knight the freight came first than the dispatchers and terminal employees, then the trucks, then the trailers, then the cat in the back alley, then the dog on side walk, and then their competitor companies, and then the drivers!
At my current company, in May I got a brand new 2013 Kenworth T 660. had 0 miles on it! I was in it for a two days with my wife riding shotgun. Only been with this company for 2 months by the way. I 84 in PA another truck jacked knife on the interstate heading west bound at 1030 pm. I seen I could hit the left shoulder and make it by the semi going down the mountain in rain, so I knew I was not gonna stop in the time before collision. Two 4 wheelers cut me off and came to a dead stop right next to the semi on the left shoulder. My only option was to hit the median and pray for the best.
I missed both 4 wheelers but got my semi stuck in the mud in the median. Had to get two heavy duty towers to pull me out!
I got my cell phone when the truck came to a stop and I pulled the brakes. First call was to 911 aka highway patrol, 2nd phone call was to my company.
Heres how the entire conversation went.
Driver I was just ran off the road in PA on I 84 going west, Dispatcher, Are you ok! Driver Yes. Dispatcher is your wife ok. Driver Yes. Dispatcher let me talk to your wife. Driver ok Dispatcher asked my wife does she hurt anywhere she said no he asked her how her nerves was doing she said they will be ok. he said ok let me talk back to your hubby.
Dispatcher did you hit anyone. Driver no. Dispatcher said ok is everyone else ok. Driver yes. Dispatcher ok forget about the truck and trailer and freight. We are getting tow trucks enroute now and when you wake up tomorrow from safe haven check the freight and let us know of any damages to anything. We don't care if the semi is damaged or not we are only worried about your wife and yourself. if semi is undriveable we will get you a rental truck once tow trucks get you out and if you cant move the truck still we will get a rental for you.
Now which company do you think every driver should be driving for? A Knight a company who dont give a rats about drivers, or my current company? -
Isaw this in action myself, i delivered in Lubbock,TX, Yesterday, and two swift drivers where there, Swift told them to be there for a 6am deliver, at coors in Lubbock, they dont start until 8am, One driver got at least 8 msg in less than an hour asking for a "DETAILED" explanation of why he is not unloaded, I know rookie drivers have to start somewhere, BUT!, MY god!!, have some common sence SWIFT!, How many msg's do you need to understand, "They dont start until 8am, And "Im not empty yet is why i havent sent the empty mac yet", So glad i dont need to deal with these IDIOT'S
-
Glad you found a home, And one you like, for me, Im just not interested in running that many miles anymore, Did it in my younger years, Now?, if I hit the 550 mark in a day, Im looking for a place to shut down, Im in no hurry, so?, no need for that triple digit truck anymore, I just want to cruise around 68, Drive about 8 hours and no more,
-
Uh...I hate to point this out to you bigblue but there is nothing "semi-legal" about running 80mph in a 75mph zone. If your logging like this then the dot will catch it sooner or later and write you a ticket for it. I'm assuming your pushing your log out to cover this and logging 70-72mph, however?
btw: you just put a brand new truck in the ditch and the dispatcher wasn't even a little curious as to why?otherhalftw Thanks this. -
Good post very informative thanks.
