makes NO SENSE to me...

whaddya gonna do when you get home, and no one around is available to let you use thier car..???

you gonna go out and rent one for the weekend, and PAY HIGHER DOLLARS for the rental AND insurance that you WILL NEED..??

you would be a dollar foolish to save pennies.(or however that old saying goes)

if your car is fully paid for, then you can reduce your insurance payments and maybe only have liability coverage instead....

 

A lot depends on where home is and where the nearest terminal is. I agree with above post ... probably not a good idea to sell it. If you have some considerable equity in a newer vehicle, perhaps you can trade out for an old beater and end up with NO payments. Even in larger metro areas, car rental locations may be a $50 cab ride away and they are typically close at noon on Saturday until Monday morning.

Besides, give trucking several months before you go to burning bridges.

 

Maybe sell your car and buy a cheap inexpensive one of which you can pay minimal insurance. Like Gizmo said though what are you going to do when do go home? How will you get back and forth to work? You could rent a car but this will probably end up costing you more in the long run.

 

only certain times of the year, are there specials for weekend rates or off season rates on car rentals.

i know, i used to be a mechanic, then a service agent at Budget, many years ago.

 

nice idea to save money...but you will need a vehicle...(grocery store, doc appt, go out to a movie, dinner, friends..etc)....i couldnt stand being with transportation on home time....might wanna rethink it...

 

It makes plenty of sense to me, I haven't had a car since 2009.

Basically, I park my truck right at the Metrorail station and get home like that, and when I need a car, I just grab a Zipcar, I don't see the issue. The only way I would buy a car again is it I got a local job, after the cost of insurance, payments, and parking a Zipcar is cheaper unless I need to drive several times a week.

 

I can think of about 300,000 communities where a trucker may call home where there is no "zipcar" and no Metrorail service within a 500 miles. Let's try and keep it real, shall we?

 

Lol he is from Illinois I thought, I know for a fact they service five different metropolitan areas in that state, not to mention other zipcar competitors like wecar, car2go, etc. I wasn't assuming he was gonna come live in Washington, DC but I am making the broad assumption that someone not having a car would live or want to live in some sort of city.
