Most of us are employed at will, you have no legal obligation to give any notice , nor do they when the shoe's on the other foot.
You will learn how this works. Being nice don't always mean smart.
Ethics are foreign to most large carrier's. They tell you to be, but they themselves in their own actions show the exact opposite of morals and ethics.
    Hypocrisy in action.
You will learn the distinct patterns of absurdity from these wild desk dwellers, you will notice stutters in their speech, the inability to answer phone calls all of a sudden. You will pre-sense there lies and misinformation.
You will know your getting ###### but youl have the time and awareness to prepare yourself for it .
Then and only then will you truly appreciate, a sense of humor ..
Welcome to trucking enjoy your stay:biggrin_25520:

Yep, that's the thing about ethics. If one behaves in an ethical way simply because the other party also behaves in a ethical way that's not ethics, its being polite. And there is nothing wrong with being polite but one should never confuse the two. Actual ethics is when one behaves in an ethical way REGARDLESS of how the other party chooses to act.

Are there lots of companies that will screw you if works our better for them? Absolutely. Does that give you license to behave in a less than ethical way? Only if you want to be a less than ethical person. End of story.

I used to worry about this and with not as much work it is again placed in a position of importance ~ once someone tries to run even a small operation a lot of this is somewhat obvious but I just do what I can to not ripp the situation and focus on "always looking" as the smarter companies will only provide start & end dates to avoid the bench of law so when termination starts to get into a lot of involved convolutions I just drop it and provide job-search targets the statement, if any, of the previous employer & my response and stop it there ==> I have a "fired" on my work-history from 2011 and is the first documented such ever ..... with these 17+ page DOT applications that is exactly what I am doing - disagree with prev basis but the decision was made by a person lacking the massive field experience + fine detail expertise due to determinant being a bias-hire

giving notice if any is possible is standard employment procedure so you did what you are supposed to do and if any future employer cannot accept that then you do not want to work there anyway

edit: re chalupa two posts above ~ " .... escorted to the gate...." for those you gather all personal items over one dollar in value and one day just dont show up, the previous day you mail early in the day a signed, legible letter stating "I terminate my employment by XYZ Company." date & sign and say nothing even if called. One call does all and after that is is "cease & desist" and just flat ignore whatever they say in later interviews stating previous employer does not fulfill your expectations of responsiveness to employer duties ....

Well, it could be the end of your story but I think every situation is different and sometimes things are not as black and white as you would like them to be. Giving two weeks is the "standard" for society and is the "polite" thing to do, but sometimes circumstances dictate that you do otherwise, if only to protect yourself. Do you tip 15% every time you go out to dinner?

Said it before: Your honor and integrity are at stake. examine the situation and look at past performance of the employer. If he s-cans all who give notice then expect that and act accordingly. If he's been cordial then give the notice.

All but one in my career got their notice, one asked for a 1 week extension. There was one that I just couldn't do which goes to what Rockee said, my FM was great but a co. man and his boss was a major DH, totally hated drivers. ( with open passion )

I applied for and received an offer from my first pvt. fleet job. It was a no brainer. Problem was I had a growing family and could not risk their security. The RM would have fired me upon notice and the new guy couldn't take me early because of training schedules.......... so I had to accept the offer and ride it out and then shaft my DM.

I tried to explain and apologize but I got no traction. I was escorted to the gate.

Started new job that Monday morning............

I tip in whatever whole dollar amount lands between 15% and 20%. And I do it every time. If the particular server was bad enough to warrant not tipping, I have a chat with the GM about it. But I still tip the server because other members of the staff get a portion of the servers tips in most places and I see no reason to cheat them simply because the server eff'd up.

But more to the point, yes there are absolutely situations which call for exceptions. Did anything in my post suggests that was no room for exceptions? Isn't the entire thread about whether or not one should give two weeks notice 'in general'? Obviously there can be exceptions, but exceptions don't change ones ethics and I don't think anything I've written suggests that it would.

Personally I would still give notice in that situation. I would fully expect the employer to fire me on the spot just like they did with everyone else. But I would still give notice just the same because like you said, its my honor and integrity that are at stake. Integrity is doing the right thing even when you know you'll end up worse off for doing it.

Until employers start saying "it's not looking like it's going to work out, we're going to give you 2 weeks to find another job then we have to let you go", I'll give them the same courtesy they will give me...

    In regards to notice's
I define notice as telling them before you quit, that you are going to quit no matter how much of a notice it is.
Certain positions would obviously call for a longer notice.
I define unethical as not giving any kind of notice or those rascals that simply never return leaving everyone guessing sometimes worried or abandon there truck.
A notice is simply a courtesy where you are informing them you will no longer be working for them .
If Carriers begin treating there driver's like actual people ,we could all live happily ever after.
If a driver gets so mad at a carrier in a position that requires clearheadedness , I find it completely reasonable that he should bring his truck back to the yard and clean it out as soon as possible. Ending a possible unsafe driving situation. Of course that driver should at least notify them by some means that he or she is indeed is separating from said carrier .
He or She may also leave them a tip :D :evil3:

Point taken and I don't mind saying....what I wrote after this paragraph is why I couldn't. It was a judgement call for me....and it did go against the grain.

Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking..............
