After being a driver for the past 24 years I feel Im fully qualified to give advice to newbies or wanna be drivers. First, this job isnt easy, the long hours, deadlines, equipment issues, loading and unloading issues and strain on family life is not easy. You dont eat good, sleep good and usually under alot of pressure. Secondly, learn about what your doin and do it well. Forget about GPS and learn to ready a map. Learn more about the mechanics of what your driving. Im suprised at how many of you dont know a thing about what your driving and pulling. You are at the bottom of the food chain on pay! Work your way up like everyone else does! Dont refuse loads! Is NYC my favorite place? No its not, but its your job, shut up and get on down the road! There are alot more companies that have a whole lot more opportunity than it was when I started, that doesnt give you any stroke. Lastly, there are alot of us old timers out here who have put in our time and that means you have to also. Ive never and there are more places I have been to I didnt like than ones I did. But geuss what thats bein a driver. It is just a job with no grattitude at all, never has had it never will!Alot of these companies want and do take advantage of drivers, be careful. this is a awesome platform to find out info. I wish we would have had it when I started. Good luck to you all.

BUT,once you put in your time ,you can dictate your conditions for employment.
I don't drive illegal (hours or equipment),night shift (midnight-0600), Northeast (north, south and west fine). I tell them upfront when I go in for interview. these are my conditions, some laugh, some like it and some toss me out on my rear.lol. the smaller companies will work with you. -
well i only have a mere 25 now myself....and just over 2 million miles

Good post.... sometimes I am amazed as to the demands and needs of these new drivers on here! A lot of it is utterly hysterical! Then there are the questions asked and when you give them the correct information they argue with you about you not being right.
Doesn't every driver want home time?
Wouldn't every driver some time or another like a local gig for a bit?
Wouldn't every driver out there own a truck if it were just that simple?Lilbit Thanks this. -

I wanted only straight days, overtime after 8 hours, over 26 dollars an hour, home every night, nice equipment that is maintained, benefits, clothing provided, vacation, oh yeah got it and I got it at 4 years into it love driving truck and would recommend it to anyone, its all in how you make it.

Total support! Except for me NYC is no go and I have 2 GPS working at all times ,after I checked with the map. You can get in trouble with or without one. Funny how those who have a choice for the most part avoid NYC, and some newbies from megacarriers find themselves in Manhattan half a year into trucking.
