I screwed up and am now parked on an exit ramp

    Thought id make a rest area with 10 min to spare but instead i sit on a exit ramp in sleeper birth. My question is i have my headlights and cab lights on along with a/c with my apu on, that will be ok,right, the apu will not let the battery die under that load, right?

    This is in kansas i just got onto i70 when for the last 30 miles i thought i was already on 70 (stupid gps) and i was looking for mm 187 and the mm were getting to about 145 then when i actually hit i70 it changed to mm 220 something with 15 min left.

    I cant fall asleep without a affirmation that ill be ok , dont want to wake up with a dead truck.

    The APU will keep the batteries charged..............just leave the parking lights on and hit the sack!!

    It appears that you must be in the Ellsworth, KS area and the rest area is around Russell, KS area, about 35 miles away.

    One thing you cannot count on a home at the inn this time of the morning, it is even hard to find a place after 6pm. There is no sure fire way to figure when and where to stop, too early you loose driving time, too late you are stuck with no where to go, esp if you are on E-logs. He had to break his 34 and his co-drivers 34 out in the middle of no where in the desert because the state patrol didn't like where they pulled off, a very wide area on side of road. They want their goods, but they don't have enough places to park.

    I don't know what ramp you are on, the main thing is if it is safe for other drivers. Husband usually pulled to the side where you would go back onto the highway vs pulling over when you 1st get off.

    Can you idle your truck any. I believe most trucks have a low voltage warning that will start chiming, but unless you know for sure it might be better to turn the truck on for a little while in about 3-4 hrs if you can. I don't know about the APU since that is for the a/c and inside of the truck I presume, not the headlights and tail lights.


    As far as the GPS, it may be in the way you are reading it. It is a good idea maybe to go over the route with a map also. GPS is just a tool, like maps. It appears that the numbers start out larger on the east of Ks and get smaller the further west you go.

    Do you have a laptop with aircard internet or are you using your phone. It is a good idea to google the rec and shipper and look over the route also. I use www.findfuelstops.com to locate fuel stops along the way and it also has things like Walmart (may not be able to park at all of them though), rest areas, etc.


    Husband just slid in last night in the Roanoke, VA area with 3 min to spare, he looked at one other T/S that was full and one rest area that was loaded. Parking is a never ending quest, some places are better now than 4 yrs ago, but it is still a challenge..

    And just make sure when you pull over on an exit ramp, that it is pretty level with no drop offs and fairly wide. We have seen the ones who pulled over and slid over and lost their load.

    Hope this helps some on short notice at least.

    I saw on another post where a lady mentioned her way of safety with the doors; take the seat belt and feed it through the door handle and latch it. Never thought of this ourselves before. Sounds like a good idea.

    We were at a rest area (no facilities) some where in IA in 2008 and had the willies when a car got in front of us and a p/u at the rear. The driver in car kept acting like he was watching inside the truck. We hurried up and finished eating and got out of there. It may have be legit, but it was sure putting off bad vibes.


    Trucking and parking is an adventure, cars should be so lucky to spend the night camping out in a truck in the boonies and nature.

    APU is designed to keep batteries charged as well...That will be fine, but turn just your parking lights on...

    Don't park on the "OFF"ramp...Always the "ON" ramp.

    trans am apu's charge the batteries, heat, ac keep the water and oil warm in the engine. you will be ok
    we must have been in olathe same time this week as i was in office thursday and friday
