I am currently looking at truck driving schools in my area. I want to get my CDL to team drive with my boyfriend who has been a driver for 14 years. The problem is I have a 7 year old daughter. We would like to take her otr with us. The problem of course is that a lot of companies won't allow a child of that age or won't allow 3 people on the truck. So I am wondering if any of you drivers know of a company that would allow us to team drive with my daughter on the truck? I am already expecting responses of drivers telling me that a truck is no place for a 7 year old, but this is my decision (which I have not taken lightly) and this is something we at least need to try out. So if you have any info that could help me I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
Team driving with a child on the truck?

When you raise a child everything you do is for the child. You don't make a child come with you because you want to be with your boyfriend more. She isn't luggage. She can't eat a normal diet on the road. She can't have a pediatrician on the road. She gets to play in a 2 ft X 4ft spot and a urine stained parking lot surrounded by all walks of life. She'll be surrounded by cancer causing diesel fumes and parking lot racers that might run over her. Everyone has to be seat belted in when riding. Are you going to make her stay strapped in bed all day?
How about have your boyfriend get a local job and do everything to give the child a normal up bringing where she can be around kids her own age and have a real education?
Besides that trucking companies won't go for it. You have to get signed permission and most are for 12 and over.Moosetek13, paul_4lp, Treefork and 24 others Thank this. -
OP if you are dead set on doing this look at crete. I took this from there website.
Family Rider Policy
Crete Carrier Corporation has one of the more progressive rider policies in the trucking industry, allowing specific family members to ride along at no cost to the driver. Authorized passengers under the family rider policy are:
- Spouse, which includes "common law" spouse where permitted by law
- One child, stepchild, foster-child or grandchild 4 years of age or younger, provided they are accompanied by the non-driving spouse.
- One child, foster-child, stepchild or grandchild 5 through 18 years of age, with or without the non-driving spouse

Back in da day when I was your daughter's age I rode w/my dad on the truck as much as I could & eventually ended up teaming w/him after I got older driving myself...but times have changed & I'm male but that part does'nt matter what sex the child is the people are different fm what I remember back then U don't know who's hanging at truckstops anymore despite their better security at the bigger chains.....Let her go to school, have a normal childhood & take her if U can in the summer so she can have a lot to talk about like my grandson did 12yrs ago.....Complete w/video remember keep a eye on her like any other time ur w/her....Nothing changes even around trucker U got sicko in ever proffession OK?!!! LOL!!
The Challenger and scottied67 Thank this. -
If you can't find a company that will let you take her and, your dead set on taking her you'll probrably have to go O/O like TruckerPete said. If you do go that route I'd look into getting a KW with a studio sleeper. You would have to look for the ones with the couch in it, it has seat belts on each end so you guys could be pretty comfy.

Home schooling in a truck, no sports or other activities, no social life or doing something as simple as riding a bike, is it fair?

What about your daughter education??? Trucking is not a good place for a child,i would think twice before jumping on any truck (my opinion, your decision.)
Fatboy42, CondoCruiser and TRKRSHONEY Thank this. -
I couldn't imagine confining a child in a truck... Good luck, though.
I gotta say, I would go nuts if I had to live with two other people in my truck. Especially a team truck. Sounds like one serious challenge to me.paul_4lp, CondoCruiser and The Challenger Thank this.
