Why don't you get you knock on the doors of the shippers you used to haul for in the "good old days" and see if they'll give you the freight (undercut your previous employer by a little). If they say yes then you can get your authority, have a ready-made customer, and have the ability to grow if you wish. Getting your authority is like jumping off a diving board...after you jump it wasn't so tough.

I've talked to the shipping manager there and he tells me that they only give direct freight to the companys they worked with before they signed a contract with a broker that handles all their loads out of Blytheville. U guys may have haul out of there your self. the company is Ryerson steel. -
This is what I will do someday, but for now I'm still trying to learn the ropes of being a o/o when I feel I'm ready I'll take the next step.

Is it only 2% I was thinking it was 5%

Ryerson's a big company, lots of subsidiaries....when you get around to getting your authority it may be a good idea to knock on their door again....could be the shipping manager doesn't want to upset the broker because the broker is making the shipper's life easy all the while getting a piece of the action from each load they get covered.
By the way, you can always file for your authority but not use it until necessary, that way it's there when you need it.
Good Luck.

I'm talking to a co I drove for a couple of years ago. B-lac express out of Jonesboro AR. they have a big contract with Tamco. they run dry van, hoppers, and are talking about starting flat bed. I know these guys and although their rates aren't the greatest I know they are honest, I think thats what I need right now. I' talk to recruters at landstar, mercer and CRST malone. and they all had some pretty good things to say, but I just can't deal with going to another place and finding out I was told a bunch of 1/2 truths. Don't get me wrong every thing they say may be true I'm sure from the things you guys have told me these are some pretty good places to work, but u know the old saying, " better the devil you Know"

mercer is straight up and have good freight out of memphis

Just go ahead and get your authority. You can rent a flat bed. You lose alot byleasing on not only with the percentage they take but you are tied to their frieght at most places. And you lose all negotiating power.
