Between those two jobs, I would choose Cardninal. It has a better work schedule for where your running, and they are a better company. I would not even consider the other one just based on the way the job magically became available.
As for the truck speed, it really make 0 difference running the northeast because even if the ###### thing went 80mph you would be lucky to manage 58mph average with traffic and other stuff. The plus is you'll start at 2:30am and that will get you thru NYC area plenty early. Working nights takes some getting use to, but after a while you will love it. The winter driving isn't going to be an issue, so don't worry so much about it.....not till they ask you to go over Donner Pass in a blizzard at least lol.
Do the Cardinal trucks have sleepers??? If so, that would be another plus. That way you could take a nap or if you had to get stuck out, you'll have somewhere to sleep. Consecutive 14hr days can get exhausting and I'd rather be able to lay down that hunch over a steering wheel.
what job would you take between these 2

Cardinal of course.

thanks for the reply. ive been leaning with cardinal for a few weeks now. had to go to the office 3 times to "fix" my application. appearntly they want every job u ever had on the app even if u only worked there for a day.so the process is still going. with this delay tho other jobs pop up and i put in an application for ##### and giggles just in case. now its like i have 8 diffrent jobs calling. Hoping this goes thru this week so i can take the road/piss test and start already. no sleepers just day cabs. I dunno what would happen if I had a ###### day and got caught out there late. I guess a hotel. According to him tho ill leave 230-3 be at 1st stop by 8 be at the 2-4 stps around 1030-12 then deadhead back. there still using paper logs. they had a older columbia sitting in the yard the day i went to do the app. I was like would this be the truck im going to use. he said for now most likely but im getting a newer truck in here and id like to keep that columbia as a spare. just have to wait for that call. the biggest hang up on my application for this job as well as others has been my psp report for that csa violation of not wearing my glasses and it coming up as driving without a cdl. some compnies dont care others reject immediatly

I'm not from that area, I'm not really to sure how many miles you'd be getting with that run at 41 cents a mile. But I can say that you'd haft to be carefull with any company that would pay by the mile for local work witch that's what it sounds like.
It would be for there benefit as any real company would pay you by the houre, for local work that is.
I would take the other job it sound fare and honest and its close to the house.Last edited: Sep 19, 2012

I think Cardinal's owned by Swift if I'm not mistaken. -
uhhh, nope. Started by 2 guys in '97 and is still privately owned. I am looking at going with Cardinal on their AutoZone account out here in CA.

Lol OK, ya that would be a quick put down to any company. Na I think it might be Oak Harbor that I was thinking of. Any ways good luck.
But that's a fact about local work. Any real company would pay by the hour. 2-300 mile a day at let's say 50 cent's ain't great especially if it takes you 14 hrs. To get it.
Add it up 250x.50=$125 at 14HRS.
Hour rate down the midle plus over time at 14 HRS.
$17x8=136. Plus 6HRS. Over time at $25.5
$25.5x6=153
=$153+136=289
Differance- hour rate 14 HRS.=$289
Milliage pay rate 250x.50x14HRS.=$125
Total differance of $164 a day.
And above all unless his run goes in a loop he's not going to make it home every day or get his 530 miles in.
With in a days work he'll have 30 min. for post and pre trips at 15 minuts each.
30min.-1Hr. For each stop, that's if they get him out right away.
15-30min. Fuel.
530 miles at an average of 50 miles an hour with 4 stops
It seems that with traffic and what not, he'd be able to get 5-550 miles legally, maybe 6.
And regardless of how he's going to run his log, it's a fact he's gonna have long days.
Say he gets home. Creative logs, and a good day.
He'll still haft to start at midnight or 1:00 o'clock, wakes up, drive to work, start at a grasping 2A.M. then work a straight 14 hrs. to 4pm.
That's not a night shift, thats a day and a night shift split in a 14 hr period.
He'd then drive back home, sleep about 6-7 hours, wake up and do it all over again.
Sounds like a wax job to me.
Even a guy without his glasses can see that.Last edited: Sep 20, 2012

well i took the cardinal gig. I like the following about it
1) same route every day. meaning no getting lost no worrying bout low clreanaces or 4 tons roads, bad directions ect. I honeslty rather do the same run everyday then have no clue where im going everyday. once i leave yard, im alone no need to call or talk to anyone unless theres an issue
2) good equipments. all the trucks in this account (4) are 2012. I just came from a hourly job 19.25 an hour driving around a heap of #### delevring to every north jersey town where a truck shouldnt be. I honeslty rather make a few bucks less and drive a nicer truck. Trailers are new too.plus deliver to 4 stops where trucks can actually get too
3) its year round work. i was making 19.25 and 29.00/ot at a job for 5 years and it was great when u worked 14 hour days but i was also off for weeks at a time in the winter. add up the loss of pay over that slow time and id make more working steady for a lil less pay. this job comes out to about 265 a day which is around 67k a year. I ve honeslty never made that much in a truck before. the last 8 years i lingerged around 48-58.
the benefits are good,u get 401k matched, uniforms(shirts) paid time off etc.
5) yes hourly around the north east is ideal and ive never had a job around here that didnt pay hourly but if i do get done within the 12 hours it comes down to 20 an hour which is fair. will I get stuck out there some days and get back late and be pissed off? of coarse. I looked at plenty of other jobs from hauling fuel to pulling containers at the peirs, bulk tanker. this job just seems like the best fit for me.
I took the drug test, physical and there new advanced ergonomics test. Dont know why I had to take that to drive with no touch freight.
The one thing i dont like is having to fuel the truck, because that can cut into my day alot.
Its a beast of a run from bridgewater nj to framington ma back to manchester, hartford and wethersfield ct.
I should be ready to go next week so ill update and see how it goes -
Good luck and keep us posted.
I don't think I,d ever be able to get used to them hours though. I know it sounds negative, but a night shift usually ends around 8 o'clock or so. It looks like you haft do that and an extra 6-8 hours on top of that.
If you get tired be sure to pull over and get some sleep.don't be dumb
No job is worth risking your safty or the safty of others no matter how much it pays.
Thanks for the post.. Good luck and be safeLast edited: Sep 26, 2012
