The possession charge was around the same time as the DUI. The DUI is a little tricky though. The DUI was in Texas, and in the great state of Texas, they tack of surcharges for different things like DUI, driving with no insurance, too many points, etc. So the surcharge for a DUI is $3000 for over the course of 2 years. I did my time, paid the fines, the case is done and over with, except that I never paid this surcharge. I chose to move to Florida instead.
This means that I can't get a driver's license in the state of Texas until I pay this surcharge, although I have a license in Florida with no problems. If I were to get a CDL in Florida and continue to live here, do you think this cause any problems for when I pass through Texas if I were to be pulled over? As far as I know, Texas is the only state that does this double jeopardy nazi BS surcharge.
Do I have a chance to become a trucker?

Your application will ask...Have you ever been convicted?
You can dance around the edges of the application all day. But you're only fooling yourself if you think you can duck and dodge for any length of time.
BTW..... that "surcharge" in Texas. Yeh, it's gonna bite you. -
You need to be careful because all DMV's are linked together. The state of Texas can suspend your license in Florida for not paying fines. My husband went in a couple of years ago to renew his drivers license..to find out that they were suspended from the court in Ohio. This was for something that happened when he was 18 and my husband was 39, so you are talking 21 years from before. We had to contact the court, and write a letter to suspend the suspension because he had moved to another state, and he needed his drivers license in order to work. Even if you have a drivers license in Florida, and you drive into Texas you will get arrested for driving on a suspended license because your name and social security number is in their system, and will show up as being suspended in Texas. We ran into the same problem with Ohio until we were able to get everything cleared up with the DMV and the state of Ohio's legal system. It's just a word of caution.
Most companies that are hiring requires that a DUI and or a misdemeanor be at least 5 years old, so the only thing you can do is call and talk to the company you are interested in. -

So you ran from our state rather than be responsible, pay for what you had done! Now I've been in a hell of a lot of trouble back in the day. I would have loved it if I had onky been charged with a DUI. I did however, do my time and pay for what they told me to.
I just guessing here but for me it seems your running would actually be there deal breaker. If I was hiring you I'd be thinking hell he may crash our truck and run etc.
By the way I was charged with more than one thing that carried a huge prison term. HUGE! The state allowed, OUR GREAT STATE allowed me to complete college in lieu of prison. My probation was tough 10 years, report every week for the first 6, drug testing, had to ask permission to even leave to county, randon drug test in addtion to the weekly, the "deal" stated that if I violated that it was an automatic 20-99 year sentence etc.
It was hard but you know what I was happy to free, grateful for my freedom, at first not really even sorry for what I did but understood that if had had any chance in life (here in the states) that I would have to follow through with what I said I would.
Now my family felt very sorry for me as I couldn't live as a normal college kid even after I graduated because I couldn't travel much but by then I understood what I had done, how bad it was and I was determined to prove I could be a man, instead of a criminal.
I took this long to tell you this because you might need to ask youself "Am I still running?" I've been there and I know it wears you out. I know that your young and might take this the wrong way but I feel you just won't actually be able to move on until you deal with this.
I will be glad to help you in any way. Be it helping you with getting the issue of the surcharge resolved or soeaking to you about getting on with your life . PM me if you'd like to speak to me I will give you my cell number -
Did you kill someone?
-
No, I did not kill anyone but my actions could have led to the deaths of more than one person. It was not a crime the State of Texas or the feds too lightly. The fact that I was a honors student, had been accepted to a good university and was a good athlete helped a bunch. Although, fact that my parents had the means and inclination to get great lawyer is what mattered most. I felt so guilty for years because my dad was about to expand his practice at the time and put it off because the legal bills were so much.
I was a very wild child in my youth from the steriods to other chemicals I was just out of control. Those days are more than 25 years behind me now but at times memories still haunt me.
Since I changed my ways many people over the years have said "you should try to help others out that are going through that" Although, I've never really know quite what to say. For me I just woke up one day and it was over. Being in jail several times, hurting everybody I knew, spending time days/weeks at a time strung hard NEVER brought me around. AA, chruch, any type of help offered didn't phase me! So what should I say? The only thing I can say is face it, be honest with youself and take responsibilty for your actions.
That's why I told the OP what I did. He WONDERS if the state of Texas will hold him to his surcharge and he bailed on them in the first place.
Now believe me I'm in NO place to judge and that's not my intention. I was simply attempting to get him to look at his situation realisticly.
Yes, that will hold you to it ALL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES WILL GET THEIR MONEY FAIR/UNFAIR
For me its the running that is the biggest problem as it MIGHT be for most employers even if it's in the past. Is thjs wrong? Of them ...well kinda
I do wish him the best as I know first hand how hard it can be7-UP, CertifiedSweetie, sb677 and 2 others Thank this. -
Thanks for your honesty texan007. We all have done things in our past that we are not proud of. I carry around some guilt myself, as do many others. All we can do is learn from our mistakes, try not to repeat them, and move forward.
Everyone has different coping mechanisms. I am a devout Catholic and seek Christ as a refuge. I'm glad you have turned your life around. It sounds like you are doing well.
Good luck to you.
(Sorry to go off-topic)mamamullins Thanks this. -
I appreciate the honesty and advice you guys are giving me. I am not running from my charges though, they are settled and my case is done and over with. I just cannot get a Texas license until I pay this surcharge. I've been doing some research and it appears that people are trying to get this whole surcharge thing thrown out and done with. The money is supposed to go to help trauma centers but hardly an does. Also, they are missing like 75% of the money they are owed because people just can't afford it. That's why I "ran" I could not afford to fork over $3000, I had no savings. I am in a better financial position now but at the same time, I feel that I should not have to pay twice for my crime. As far as my employer seeing that I am "running" I don't think that will be an issue, I will find one way or another to get this surcharge off of my record and all my licenses back, $3000 is a ton of money to some people...
