Hooking doubles/triples

Never got brave enough to try a whole set. Only seen it done a couple of times. I did however get real good at backing the lead and dolly. Could hook up faster that way, while most were looking for their lead box, I was hooked and gone.

 

dont your dollies have a brake apply/release valve that you can set the brakes on the dollie?

 

Some do but most don't they just have the petcock the let the air out. I've always found it easier to go hook your front box to a gear and then grab the hostler and put your second box in line with the gear. Much faster that way.

just turn the wheel in the direction you want the gear to go. The front trailer will go the opposite way. Just think about the pivot points. When you turn the wheel to the left, it pushes the ### end of the trailer to the right and then pushes the dolly in the opposite direction.

But try to make sure the dolly is almost straight as they get away fast and you lose sight of it as the side of the trailer blocks it..takes practice. Took me a while, and Im still getting better at it.

With a single axle it moves super fast so crank the wheel then crank it the other way quickly. I drive the volvo in my sig and it takes forever, so if Im super close to the back pup the dolly hardly moves.

 

I just found this forum.. There is no real best way to hook sets. It's pretty much whatever works best for you with the equipment you're using. The only thing I would say everyone should do is hook and split the same exact way every time. That's the best way to avoid doing something stupid.

 

I've pulled pups exactly three trips in my whole time on the road. Hooking them up was a bit of a pain as a rookie, but definitely didn't mind pulling them. Don't think I'd want to do that on a regular basis though!

 

that's one of the reasons im still at con-way. I love pulling doubles/triples. everytime i look in my mirrors and see the trailers back there i smile. I think pulling a long box is so boring.

 

yeah we pulled doubles for Carolina before ABF bought them out back in the early 90's....did a dedicated from Memphis to La Mirada CA....then pulled them again for Estes...back in about 06??....love pullin doubles....miss it

 

i might add...both times..we drove for a contractor...first time (carolina) drove a 379 pete...then when we pulled estes...had a W900L.....
