@CatainX & Dan..Not to shadow box here; but I have been driving approx. 14yrs; Not really a newbie! Also, is glass pretty difficult to tarp, haul, unload? Why does glass pay more exactly? I have never hauled it so I dont know. Only Reefer all these years. I have seen some guys here say that there only getting 2000-2500 miles per week. That true?
Not to sound ugly here; however thats pretty low mileage if its "true".. It you could hit 2800-3100 every week, now thats getting after it! Are there plenty of miles on the glass account? Wichita Falls, as well? Yeah they might bend on the 75 mile radius. I will have too ask.
Compare glass to reefer; who gets the most miles and money?
Thank's...

Maverick or Prime, just got my CDL and was thinking if I went to Maverick I would lose anything I learned about shifting.

when was the last time you rode a bicycle?
if its been a few years since you rode a bicycle and you had to do so, do you think you could still ride a bicycle?
If your answer to the 3rd question is no, meaning that you've learned to do something but if you dont use that skill you've aquired you will never be able to do it again, then go with the company you mentioned that doesn't drive "automatics" -
Just my two cents.... carry onsewerman, seawheeler and Pilot1 Thank this. -
Glass gets paid more because of the extra time it takes to secure and tarp the load, and when driving glass, you really do have to be careful how you drive, it can shatter easily if you're not watching what you're doing.
2000 - 2500 miles seems to be typical across both reefer and glass at Maverick. Flatbedders probably make a bit more due to tarp pay, and glass makes more per mile plus tarp pay. But, reefer gets paid $15 per hour detention pay a LOT more often than flatbed or glass. It probably just about balances out.
I don't believe glass is any more difficult to tarp than flatbed, although you can't be afraid of heights. (And before anyone says "How would you know?", I went through all flatbed and glass training before I decided to move to reefer, so I know.)
2800 - 3100 miles every week would be nice, but I don't see it much myself or from other drivers here. It happens, but definitely not every week. Keep in mind that regional and dedicated flatbed drivers go home every weekend, which obviously cuts into driving time. And jxu417 is also right, you can spend a couple hours each day or every couple days securing and tarping a load, which also eats into driving time.
But if you have 14 years OTR experience, you'll be starting out making around .49 - .51 per mile in the glass division, and mid 40s in reefer or flatbed, which should make up for the slightly lower weekly mileage. -
As far as who gets the most money glass or reefer a.k.a.Maverick's TCD(Temperature Controlled Division) on average? I'd ask a recruiter.
Our vacation pay at Maverick is now based on average income for the previous 52 weeks so Maverick obviously has an individual drivers average. I'm sure they have a breakdown of average paycheck per division. Never hurts to ask.Pilot1 Thanks this. -
Thank-you to the guys above. The tarp pay as mentioned, in the "GLASS" account how much is the tarp pay? Also; what is the estimated time it takes to tarp a glass load? I also want you guys to know that these questions are not asked in terms of negativity, just that I need to make and informed decision. I have a-lot at stake here; so do you guys. In terms of bills at home & such. Job searching seems to be more problematic these days.
jxu417 Thanks this. -
Tarp pay for glass is the same as flatbed, $25 per load. I hauled glass for about a year and then went over to flatbed. This cost me .06 per mile but I'm making about the same money and now I get home most weekends.
It can take up to 5 hours to load, secure and tarp a glass load. Also all glass loads are tarted. They also use some drop deck trailers that have a tarp attached to them and are much eiseier to tarp.
The dedicated runs out of the falls are much different, they are hauling containers of glass down to the port in Houstion. -
