Has anyone else noticed with the economy in the toilet that it seems every Joe Schmoe wants to now become Billy Bigrigger? It seems to me (and I've only been at this 11 years) that when the economy is good, everyone hates truck drivers. But now that the economy has tanked, suddenly truck driving looks so good to the very people who spent the last few years crying for tougher laws for trucks. Maybe I'm all wrong on this as I only run local anymore, but I think I see a trend going on here. It seems to me I read thread after thread on here about people coming into this industry with rose colored glasses on only to leave in a couple months later. What the h### is going on here?

The industry has created the monster by placing all this advertising telling everybody that you can make X amount of money a year. The uninformed fall for the propaganda and get into the industry under false pretenses. Once they get into the industry they see what it is actually all about and it does not come close to the propaganda that these companies and schools have filled their heads with.

Its not a job its an adventure......Thats the way recruiters and some companies make it look. I was told the exact same thing when I was drafted...Boy was I surprised.... and lots of folks young and old , educated and not so smart, find out REAL quick that the trucking lifestyle is HARD work. But it is also some rewarding work...I've always said you get back exactly what you put into something no matter what it is, and I can tell you without a doubt that I wouldn't change a thing about my entire 32 year career behind the wheel of a truck. Raised 2 sons sent both of them to college...the oldest to med school and their Mom never had to work outside the house..so trucking was very, very good to me.

oh dont get me wrong this line of work has been pretty awesome for me. I live a very comfortable life. But I have worked for it too. I have to agree, you get out of it what you put into it. and if you go in not expecting much, thats about what you're gonna get

I saw the same thing! A couple of guys went the CDL-A route knowing full well that they would never use it! I bet if they paid out of pocket that would've been different.

Economy tanks the mega carriers scream driver shortage so they get the government kickbacks for hiring training new drivers. Think about it how many loads get moved by new hires for CRST, Swift, England, Werner at .12 to .28 cpm most do not last more than a year heck My class 16 people there is only 3 of us still driving 4-5 didn't make it thru 90 days only 3 of us made it thru the 8 month contract. the mega carriers (most of them) are dependent on new hires to keep pay rates down which in turn allows them to cut rates on loads and still turn a razor thin profit
