Hello truckers!
I drove, mostly OTR from '97 - '04. Quit driving to go to college (tech school followed by 5 years for Bachelors degree then a year and a half of grad school). I have kept my CDL current.
But that lack of recent experience is a killer.
It appears my choices for companies are very limited.
I've contacted SWIFT and CR England about the "refresher/retraining" thing.
I live right off 25 in northern Colorado.
Any suggestions for better ways to get back on the road?
I do have kids to feed .....
Thinking about getting back on the road

Since you live near Denver, contact Navajo.com & ask their advice.
That is a private/family owned company, so you never know what help/advice they may offer.Last edited: Oct 14, 2012

Just have to ask, what's up with the schooling and job thing there? Seems like you invested a lot of time and money into that. Just curious...

Navajo requires 1 year recent experience.
I got a BS in Physics because Electrical Engineering wasn't available where I lived & worked at the time. I managed to get into CSU's MS EE program, but didn't quite have all I needed for a background in EE to pass MS classes, so I'm on the verge of flunking out.
I am working on finding EE or IT jobs. That market seems to be slow here. I don't have time to sit and wait for a job.
and, yes, I do have significant student loan debttirednaz Thanks this. -
This is from Navajo website :
Minimum 1 year recent over the road in the past 3 years, tractor-trailer experience or recent driving school graduate.
I know you read it, but, I was thinking since you have tractor-trailer experience, they might come up with a plan for you, since they are privately owned & have flexibility a publicly owned company would not have.. I would just walk in and talk to them in person.
I understand family, I had 7 children and still have 2 at home in school, one in first grade. I'm just trying to be helpful, if I can.
In the past year, lots of IT people and degreed people on this forum. Seems the IT community is saturated, so the pay is dropping. I have 2 friends with EE degrees, one found work in Salt Lake City working on hospital equipment & the other had to relocate to find work & is doing the same now in Beijing hospitals. Best wishes to you in your quest.Last edited: Oct 14, 2012

Thx Chinatown. I'll give Navajo a shot.
At this point I'm leaning toward Swift for the refresher/retraining time. -
I was in the same situation as yourself. Experienced, but none recent. Went with Swift. Have been pleasantly surprised by how everything has gone so far. Training pay is low to start, but raises come rapidly. Expect .32 to .52 cpm depending on LOH after 1 year. Good training, equipment, treatment and lots
of freight. Good luck.t2kburl Thanks this. -
It really looks like Swift will be the way I'll have to go. I don't like the fact that my million previous miles don't count for anything at all.
Still holding out hope for EE jobs. Had a solid 1st interview for one today. -

I believe the above is copied from Navajo.com. Is that correct?
