One with good ground clearance. Less chance of melting something when using a Tiger Torch.

    One with a heater.

    That works.

ANY vehicle will do. While it is better for a vehicle to be plugged in, gasoline engine vehicles in good tune and with a good battery will start fine down to -40. As a human race we managed to get this far without everything plugged in. 4WD is not necessary... nice to have for the three times a year you can really use it, but not necessary. Yes, all things being equal, I would take an AWD or 4WD over a 2WD, but that isn't a deal-breaker. Especially if all you are talking about it basic transportation. Get a smallish econo-car with FWD, put good SNOW tires on (four of 'em), make sure the battery is 100% and you'll be golden. A RWD car/truck (with four snow tires) is fine too, just put some weight in the trunk/bed... my first half-dozen vehicles (and several since) were RWD. Heck, I commuted one winter in Calgary on a motorcycle... used the outriggers (feet) a fair bit.

You seem to be getting hung up on details and losing sight of the big picture. Sure, it is better to be prepared, and of course it would be foolish to not have necessities like good thermal underware, glove/mitts, touques, etc., but stop focussing on the little things.

Just trying to prepare myself and see if its actually worth dropping everything and moving myself and my family out there. I know I wouldn't be coming out there for the scenery and weather. Plus if I'm still saving the same amount as a normal job in the city because of the costs, there wouldn't be much of a point going through the headache. I'm just a young guy trying to find the best way for myself and my family. I'm sure everyone has felt this way at some point in their lives

I have to disagree with that statement.

My P/U with 80,000 km will not start @ -40, maybe -30 but why would anyone punish an engine like that ? I plug in @ -18-20ish. As far as your opinion on 4 wheel drive, I just witnessed a head on wreck last Wed morning because a guy didn't have his truck in 4 wheel drive, he fishtailed out and crossed the center line hitting another P/U head on @ (70-80 kmh) It was very slick, serious injuries to both drivers. Warmish snow on warmish pavement packs down to solid polished ice pretty quick. I use 4 wheel drive most of the winter here in Fort St John, you don't make much money in hospital.

I know this isn't really on the subject of this forum, but I have a friend who is looking for a labour job in the patch. No experience and only class 5. Hard worker and pretty handy. Anyone have any ideas on companies? Thank you
