Thumper88- he just graduated from CDL school at the end of August. He took a job at a local trucking company, but no longer works there,( we'll just say they are a business we do not want to be associated with) & leave it at that. He drove for them for 1 week, flatbed, oversized & heavy haul. He very much enjoyed the work, but the company could definitely go to the top of the DON'T work here list!

I've tried to get him interested in computers & technological things, but he's never had a use for it before now & we're hoping it won't be his downfall. He has a hard time letting someone know he doesn't understand something, he thinks he'll be seen as an "ignorant country hick"

As you'll see among these pages there are no dumb questions. Nothing wrong with asking when you don't know something. In this industry it's a necessity and prerequisite to ask if you don't know.Huggibear Thanks this. -
Huggibear- I was gonna tell him about a flatbed company, but he needs some experience. I think 2 years or 1 year with being a cdl school grad. Tell him not to worry about the way people think about his computer skills. He is not an "ignorant country hick", he simply had no use for them in the past employment. He should get into one of those free computer classes they do at the libraries. It teaches him the basics of computers. Pretty much they are point and click now. Computers are going to be pretty much in every job these days and in order to be competative in the job market, he should embrace the technology. Just a thought from another country boy. Hope he does well in whatever job he gets in the future. I am going to a new job this Sunday, a flatbed company, and so far they seem pretty good. Even the drivers talk highly of them. Well good luck. TTYL

That's what the instructors are. Perhaps I over generalized there. By office folk I meant anyone who is not currently a driver.

Most everything I do on the internet is from my phone, no computer at home, but I'm off work this weekend & I am going to try to get Wayne to go to WalMart with me & "play" a little on some laptops so he can get familiar with the way they work. We live in a smallish town in Alabama where the library is closed on weekends & has 12 computers, but no classes. We're also going to work on his map reading skills some more. I have been reading all the questions & answers on this thread & you guys have really helped alot! Thanx so much!

Truckers for the most part, take care of our own. Maps are easy to read. Get him a truckers GPS. But still teach him the map as a back up. Computers are pretty basic now-a-days they are point and click. Some of them are "plug and play". The wires used to hook everything up are even color coded on the backs of them. The key thing to remember is just have patience with everything because it will take time adjusting to something you are not used to and he can get frustrated easily on computers. That is, sometimes it takes time to load programs, depending on the size of them. But after working with them, he'll be ok. Just practice with him for a bit until he is familiar with them. Enjoy...ttyl.
