I heard about the Central safety message today. I hope none of your classmates were among the rollovers, didn't hear if anyone was hurt hope not. Dropping a truck on its side is a scary feeling. Had a friend jack knife an MT once stayed upright, hit a patch of ice someplace in IL. He gave me a call right after it happened said he never saw it coming. He's in his fifth year with Central and on his second lease reason being very little damage to the trailer but it moved the sleeper 5" off the frame. Got a new sleeper out of it. He came away with an all new view of how not to drive during the winter.
Problem with ice is it sees you long before you see it.biggbowler, Diner Man, mama mia and 1 other person Thank this. -
if your headlights reflect off the road as if there were a mirror. your on ice.
if you look real closely at the road, usually you can tell the difference n road texture and color between ice and no ice. -
i have the weather bug app on my phone. it has doppler that shows snow and rain. gives you weather alerts. even if there's flooding or fire conditions.
there's also 511 from your cell phone. give roads closures and chain laws. all western states have it. can't vouch for the east. -
Another "am I on ice" tip. Look at the tires of the cars in front of you. If there is no spray, you may be on ice.
mama mia Thanks this. -
And for other new drivers when shutting down for you 10 on an ice covered surface don't just pull in and stop. Cool your tires off a little by moving back and forward on the ice otherwise when you wake up you will be stuck. As your tires will melt the ice then the ice will refreeze overnight. So always move them tires back and forth a bit to cool them off some before you set your brake.
Diner Man, Arkansas Frost and biggbowler Thank this. -
at 30 degrees and ice on the road. or even plain snow. your tires aren't gonna heat up much at all. by the time you get parked. your tires will defenitly be cold.
have yet to see tires freeze to the ground.
i've seen brakes freeze up though.
the trick is to lower your landing gear to the ground. drop your suspension bags. engage 4 wheel drive. put truck in gear and release clutch just enough to make the tires spin. disengage the switch. raise the bags and landing gear. off you go.
and like 6pak says. NEVER use the trailer brakes if you been driving in the snow. cuz now your in for a headache.
you all would be smart to pack around some salt too. one thing you don't want is jamming up the parking lot becuase your stuck on ice and spinning the wheels. OR, to be stuck in the middle of nowhere and nothing to help you get out.
you can also throw salt at the brakes should the need arise. although a can of brake cleaner would work better to melt the ice.
gots to be creative. cuz a hammer isn't the only solution.
Diner Man and Arkansas Frost Thank this. -
never thought of the brake cleaner idea but he11 yea that will work.

Weatherbug is known to crash some phones. And 511 is not in all states. In addition the time I was referring to in AZ 511 said nothing, neither did the other number but the website did.
-
never heard of weatherbug crashing phones.
it's an app. either it works or it don't. it don't crash phones. and it DOES work.
i've heard it had problems on computers. 15 years ago. but i've never head a problem with it.
