This Thread is here to give wannabe's and rookies and insight to real time trips with trip planning and tips. So they can be ahead of the game if they choose to make trucking their career path.. Also experienced guys can chime in with their loads or even tips what they would do and why they would do it that way. Anybody can participate. I choose to use pictures to show those who don't know what pre plans or dispatches, and E logs look like. I'll do it as long as I'm not wasting a lot of data on my Verizon Mifi. Feel free to ask questions and make suggestions. Lets Roll

My way is pretty basic, I'm a day person, sleep at night, drive during the day. That can flutuate, as in starting driving at 4am or running late until about 11pm. I get my rest, get up and am rolling in about 30 minutes. I know I've got to do about 600 mi that day and starting early means I'll get it done. And figuring 600 mi a day, it's easy to trip-plan. And always try to plan your way around large cities during rush hours.

Here are some tools I use on a daily basis.

www.maps.google.com I like that the most because of the street view and the satellite view of places. You can see if there is parking at a shipper or receiver or if the place is smack dab in a residential neighborhood. In which you probably don't want to show up until your appt time.

http://www.weather.com/maps/maptype/weeklyplannerusnational/index_large.html I use this when I want to get a truck wash to see if I'll be running into bad weather so not wasting precious time sitting at a truck wash only to have it clean for a few hours. I also use this mostly in the winter time to see where the snow is and I can trip plan accordingly.

I have been driving since I was 21 but closer to 22. I'm now 37 and I'm still not good at math so don't ask me to add it up. I have driven local, regional, and OTR. I have been at current company for over 2 years and pulling reefer trailers for over 10 years. I don't know its just something about hauling butts.

Current company I'm with has E-Logs, and fuel routing. They didn't when I came, but things change and you adjust or get to stepping. Was against both at the start and now I love it.

Here is a little picture of our fuel routeing it is to big to display everything and mostly they care about you getting the fuel since they get a discount and you can pretty much route yourself. As long as it is not to far out of route. I find it normally goes the way I was going anyway so I pretty much follow it. Today I might not because I can probably cut off 60 miles or so by hitting back roads and save them a dollar or 2 in toll money.

Thanks for starting this thread! I start right out of school with Watkins Shepard for their 10 day orientation and I'm sure I'll be in touch. Your timing is impeccable!

Not what some people forget to mention is about ETA or PTA. PTA is the Practical Time available for next load. So I normally put in my PTA 2 hours after appt. So I set it for 9am and I got Pre planned that Friday for the load picking up after I deliver. The sooner you put in your PTA the more likely you are to get a load planned. Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. Here's next load info. Image32.jpg Image33.jpg

Well mine is a bit more planned out than most, but then I can usually tell dispatch to within 15min of what time I will arrive.

    Current load: Dispatch

    Auto parts:
    load address appointment time.
    Detroit to Edmonton Alberta Canada.
load info 43,790 lbs in 53 ft dry van.
    Delivery address and unload appointment.
    Customs broker GH Younge

Now I know there are 2 possible routes for this trip:

First is through Chicago to Pembina ND to Winnipeg then Hwy 16 to Edmonton. miles 1990.8
Second Hwy 75 north through Sault Saint Marie , Hwy 17 to Winnipeg, then TC1 to Hwy 16 to Edmonton. 2075.0 miles.

Now here is where experience and planning come into play. The first route is shorter by 85 miles give or take. But you have the tollways and Chicago to deal with. 11/14 log times. Route 2 you avoid the tollways Chicago, and are able to run 13/14 logs with split sleeper. You will be going the more cost effective route both in time and fuel to go the second route. ADDED BONUS you can run heavier on Canada roads than you can on interstate. Therefore no worries maxing out your fuel load.

I calculated my fuel burn and could make Winnipeg on full tanks. Thus minimizing the number of times I need to stop for fuel. Drove 10 hours the first day, stopped at a little town parked up for the night no worries about log hours due to the 13/14 regs. Did 8 hours sleep time, hit the road and drove another 3 hours. Stopped at Thunder Bay, had shower and breakfast, fuel, net 2 hours off duty, hit the road drove 10 hours, arrived Brandon Manitoba Canada, parked up at a Petro Pass truck stop. 8 hours bunk time, fuel/pretrip both at the same 15 minute log entry. Drove 3 hours to Saskatchewan had breakfast, and did some grocery shopping at a little store, net 2 hours. Drove 10 hours to Lloydminister Saskatchewn/Alberta, parked at Husky truck stop had shower and 8 hours bunk time. Drove to Sherwood Park Alberta Parked at FJ, 10 hours bunk/off duty. unload appointment 8 AM.

My reload is Edmonton Alberta to Laredo Texas Load info and total trip plan to follow.

Here's how I ran the first leg. I know that the pick up time was for 2am but its a meat load and normally those are not ready on time. So I didn't leave house until after midnight. Here's what the log looks like. You will see I came on duty at bottom for 15mins(pretrip) then I went off duty because I left something at home and wife had to bring it to me. Then I drove a little on the D line I went back onduty to fuel. Back to drive the next onduty is when I dropped and hooked at the shipper then went off duty (pleading the 5th). The next off duty you see is where I scaled load but again(pleading the 5th). I could of scaled in the town I was at but they don't give receipts, and I need a receipt instead of the ticket to get reimbursed I stopped in Towanda, KS a service plaze on the 35 toll road for my break. Had 20 mins remaining b4 I was in violation. Image34.jpg Image35.jpg

The second picture shows you today. Now with all the trip planning in the world. You still have to do what your body says to do. So I had planned on driving as close to my 11 as possible. But my body seen a rest area it was like time for a nap and as you see that nap has lasted a lot longer then expected. I'm still debating with myself either to take an 8hr break and then drive the 4hours and then take a 2 hour break to finish up my 10 and get 6 hours back. The place I'm going from google maps seems like it has truck parking so that's my destination. I should finish up my 8 hours and still have time to get on the other side of chicago b4 traffic gets too bad.

Also the 1st onduty time you see is my fuel stop and pretrip. Killed 2 birds with 1 stone. Saved 15 mins doing that. I probably should of stayed at the fuel stop but I thought since I got out and was moving around I could knock out that last 4hours, but as you see it didn't work.

Also for the experienced guys or for those who know there way from Iowa to Green Bay, WI. I haven't went that way in awhile but if I cut up through 151 most of that is 4lane and not 2 many traffic lights if I'm not mistaking. Gps, and Fuel route wants me to go 80, 88,39, to 43. Its about 60 miles longer but you can keep the cruise control on. See even the old guys need a refresher every now and then. Really set on hitting 151 though. Anyway back to nap time.

A useful tool I have is a pocket guide for truck stops. it also has rest areas. this way I can plan a stop ahead of time. it is only about $7 at a t/s.

So here it is trip plan number 102212: Try to stay awake please:
    Load info:
    Preloaded trailer # 0000000
    Frozen maintain -10 F
    Load frozen food
    Wt. 39,890
Ace manifest accepted, cross Sweet grass MT.
No unload appt required drop trailer for export to Mexico
Load to arrive no later than 0800 10-26-12
    Receiver addresses and phone number
    Broker phone number.

For obvious reasons I am not putting all information here, names, addresses ect have been omitted for security reasons.

Now I have 31 hours 24 minutes left on my log.

According to Truck GPS the trip is 2571 miles. But being a skilled professional I know that is ######## and there is a better way. Out comes laptop and MS Streets and Trips 2011. Punch in information start and stop come up with 2309.5 miles. Get out the two do not leave without items : 2012 national truck stop directory and you guess it 2012 motor carriers Road Atlas. Now I mentioned the atlas well I use govt road maps for my trips but the atlas is good for new drivers what I want from it is the phone/fax numbers for the operating authorities for each state they will give me my updated restrictions and any changes to heights the atlas is time sensitive as it was printed at the beginning of the year.

    Montana; 406-444-6130 fax none
    Wyoming 307-77-4850 fax 307-777-4772
    Colorado 303-894-2000 fax303-894-2071
    Oklahoma 405-521-2251 fax 405-521-2916
    Texas 800-299-1700 none

Now that I have these I can call and get the most recent information.
Streets and trips also gives you any road construction information, where when ect. You can plan any detours ect from that. Check route from MS streets and trips is good to go no restrictions on that route. Microsoft streets and trips 149.00 with gps usb attachment. Cobra GPS platinum 300.00 and change and gave longer routing.

Now 2309.5 divided by 50 gives me my driving time. 46.19 hours. Divide that by 11 = 4.19 so I will need to add 40 hours sleeper birth/off duty to the total = 86.19 hours divided by 24= 3.591 3-1/2 days it is going to take.

So going back I only have 31 hours 24 minutes left on my log. So I will need to get a hold of dispatch and see if arrangements can be made for Jim to meet me at a location for a load swap advantage of having my husband driving for the same dispatcher. Or get another driver to meet me and switch loads so I can reset. If not I will have to refuse the load.

Called dispatch have made arrangements for Jim and I to meet and swap loads. Reefer weights more at front for obvious reasons. I will scale the load and determine what my fuel load can be to stay legal. 1 gallon fuel is approx 7 lbs. I know I wont be able to run full tanks with this load. I then go to the truckers atlas and find the weight scale locations. I calculate how much fuel I can take on and be legal when I hit the scales. I have never had an overweight ticket in the years I have been driving.

My calculations tell me full tanks I will be 800 lbs over weight. 800 divided by 7 = 114.28 gallons subtract that from my tank full = 185.72 so just over ½ tanks. Burn rate to scale distance divided by MPG. I average 7.6 with my truck so I can take on that many gallons from where I fill to the scale and still be legal when I arrive even though technically I leave the fuel island overweight.
