1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

    Hello Drivers,
My name is Mark and I am looking to obtain my CDL. After doing tons of research, it seems as though company-sponsored schools are waste of time and money. I know of a couple of people that got their start in trucking by someone giving them a chance and that's what I am asking for, a chance.
I am not asking for a free ride, I am looking real world training from an O/O that is willing to teach me the ins and outs of being a Professional Driver.

So here is how I think it might work.

    What I get:
    Pre-trip
    Air Brakes
    Starting and Stopping
    Changing Gears
    Hook and Drop
Backing Trailer Straight Line and Docks
    Parallel Parking
    Scales
    Logs
Axel Locations (where to place based on load)
    .15 - .18 per mile ($150 - $180 per 1000 miles) until able to take test

    What O/O Gets
Someone to drive so you keep moving more than 11 hrs per day
    Someone to talk to
Someone to do the dirty work i.e. putting on tire chains, washing cab, removing trash…
Satisfaction of properly training a new driver

The o/o wont be able to drive more until you get your own cdl. Good luck with this endeavor. Try a community college

Sure he can drive. He would have to drive first then watch you drive. He has to justify his hours in the passenger seat equal to your driving hours. He can't be in the sleeper while you're driving. Then you both would have to take a 10 hour break together.

Your problem is you'll still have to go with a company that accepts new drivers and they require training at an accredited school.

You might get lucky with a local job like a dump truck or maybe CocaCola. OTR it would probably have to be an OO with a couple trucks if he can get his insurance company to accept you. I think Watkins-Shepherd accepts driver with zero experience.
