Hi, I am a female setting out on the path to become a truck driver. I start school with a technical college in Jan. My plan after that was to go to USXpress. I have been on these boards for some time reading the good and the bad about trucking companies. Basically, decided its a crap shoot. Some love the company they are driving for and some hate them and leave. I am a registered nurse, why would I want to leave that and become a truck driver? 1. Burnout, nurse to patient ratio too high, charting to protect hospital all important over patient care. 2. Not able to save any money. I plan on not having a home or any utility bills, home time will be spent with friends and family along the way. I do not mind being on the road for many weeks at a time. I do not mind sleeping in small quarters. I am a loner by nature and am comfortable with the voices inside my own head:biggrin_25512::biggrin_2552: just a joke.

So any females OTR out there who can suggest a company they work for that has treated them right, given them the miles they need 2500 ++ a week, owns equipment that is not always breaking down, trainers that don't try to molest you, please give me some advice. All will be appreciated. I am a young 55 and have many miles left on me.

I am not a female but I did go to work for USXpress. My advice is don't do it if you are going to be a solo, company driver. They kept me on the east coast(which means no miles) and you are also REQUIRED to do local deliveries after you deliver your long distance load in a city. The pay for this is 50.00 and it will take up your whole day when you could be putting in some miles. Bottom line, I was going broke after 2 months and left them.

I was making good money as an RN about the same as some of the drivers say they are 500 week after taxes and medical etc. It is a very hard occupation. Very long hours on your feet, lifting, pulling, hard on the back, etc. All nurses now do shifts of 12 hours, which turn into 13, 14 by the time you are done. You have to do 3 of those all in a row or broken up. Three in a row is very hard, very little sleep. I do not think I will make more as a truck driver but with no apartment, no utilities, I would be able to bank most of the money. Just less responsibility, but then I have not taken the leap yet. It is a possibility though. I know of other nurses left the profession to become truck drivers.
