I just woundering what others think. I saw a flat bed rip out the front axle on his trailer while backing into a spot. This was on a 2011 benson. the front axle supports snapped and sounded like a bomb exploding. it tore the air bags apart, lines damaged and the axle shot over so that the left tire was sitting against the frame rails.

What do you think of SS on spread axles. Personal i Dont like them on drive axles, trailers with normal tandems i could see but a spread axle just seems like alot of stress on the supports

Keim trucking has been running wide based on spreads since sometime in the mid 90's. They seem to have it all worked out. Every one of their trucks and trailers has wide based. I think they were the first trucking company to go 100% to wide based all the way around.

I may be wrong but I don't think you can put 40,000lbs on a spread if your running super singles compared to duals.

Sounds to me like the operator had maybe NOT been using the dump valve on a regular basis and when you witnessed that- it was the culmination of repeated abuse. The proverbial straw, if you will.

Likely nothing to do with the type of tires.

Most trailers at this side of the pond have super singles, I've never seen problems like that, they have less rolling resistance but also have resistance dragging sideways too so should cause less pressure to make an axle break away, sounds like bad maintenance

Yes but do they have 3.7 meters between axles?

Ahhh no but all our trailers are on duals cos it's all step deck and lowbeds we have and I find the duals dig in harder on tight turns

Correction. It's 3.07 meters between axles. Scania Man, in the US if the axles are over 121" apart, they are considered a separate axle and can carry up to 20,000 each. Hard on tires and trailers if the dump valve is not used on tight turns.

    Scania man Thanks this.
