just what do the nitrates do in antifreeze? i was told that they r supposed to stop from blowing a hole in a liner....but i didnt think antifreeze would blow a hole in a liner. ive run without it in and had no problems.

It leaves a protective film on the liner for the tiny air bubbles to pop on without attacking the liner surface.

It prevents the antifreeze from corroding liners, etc.

How long have you been running without it?

You need to google cavitation on liners and see what you find. It is real, it will cost you if you don't handle it properly.

When the diesel fuel combusts, it creates a small sonic boom that can cause the anti-freeze to leave the liner creating a small vacuum spot. This spot overheats quickly and will eventually develop a hole in the liner.

SCA additives prevent this and are stored in the coolant filter where they release slowly in the antifreeze.

Helps slow the effects of cavitation on the liners. At each service you should be checking the SCA levels in your coolant to maintain the proper level of SCA's in your coolant.

A lot of assumptions here. First the op saying he doesn't run nitrates. I have no idea how to respond to that. It depends on what type of coolant. Green coolant comes precharged usually. With the coolant filter you're just topping it off. Red coolant needs a blank. Yellow coolant doesn't have any nitrates at all.

the reason i put the question out there is ... i was having a water leak and it took me a couple weeks to finally find the leak. i have been adding the 50/50 premix and the last oil change i was told the nitrates was low. so they added it to the system but i hadnt found the leak at that time...this was on oct 30. i finally found the leak and put a new hose on this weekend nov 4. i drained the system and put the same antifreeze back in and then added 3 new gallon of 50/50 to top it off. i will know this week if i was successful in taking care of my leak. i had been puttin just straight water in cause i didnt want to throw more money away on antifreeze. i havnt checked the nitrates so im not sure where they r. the truck i didnt run nitrates in was my old truck, a 2000 t6 with a 3406E. never had any problems with the old motor. i thank everyone who has put their .02 in on this.

Stop using 50/50 anti-freeze as it's just a ripoff. Most of the gallons containers near me are only $1 cheaper then the 100%.
