Having an issue with the driver side rear axle brake on my stepdeck and wondering if you guys have got any advice on what to fix. I just replaced the shoes on the trailer and one drum about 6000 miles ago. I am having issues with the brakes where I replaced the drum specifically locking up when the others arent (anti lock brakes 2010 model year). It has also had the axle seals replaced on this axle (both sides) and new hardware kits were installed with the shoes. The brake is adjusted right but when I apply the brakes, this one wants to lock up and just had (only this brake) give me some smoke when I was coming down Ashland pass on I-5 heading home so its obviously applying itself harder than the other brakes. Got any ideas?

what about the poportioning valve, could be sending too much pressure to that brake, or could be a bad air can
SHC and Mommas_money_maker Thank this. -
I was thinking that it could be the valve but wanted some good second opinions before I go tearing into it. I dont think its the can but of course I could be wrong.

It's most likely the new drum on that one wheel position giving you better braking on just that wheel.

Very unlikely its an air system problem. Two things to check for. The first is the s-cam and bushings. With the brakes released attempt to pry the slack adjuster up and down as well as sideways. Very little play is acceptable. The bushing right beside the slack always wears before the brake side bushing does. This will cause exactly what you describe. The aecond is an out of round drum. We are seeing a lot of Chinese knockoff drums. With a full load make a light hand valve application at low speed. If there is surging you may have an out of round drum. You could also look at the drum to see if you have any spots where the shoe is not making contact.

I was wondering about the slack adjuster . Right before I replaced the brakes and this drum I had noticed a little of the issue back there but decided since the shoes were worn out that it had something to do with it. The reason I replaced this drum as the others are in awesome shape is that it had a little lip on it and DOT frowns on that. I will check the out of round issue and will check out the slack adjuster very closely.

It's not the slack itself. It's the bushing where the s cam rides.

Slack Adjuster is over adjusting. Replace it. Maybe the bushing is contributing, I'd replace the both of them. The Challenger and Mommas_money_maker Thank this.

I have to ask this.
How much is a new drum? -
Maybe it's got Alaskan Moose Hair stuck in it ???? LOL
I second the valve or maybe the slack adjuster is going bad.Mommas_money_maker and MackDaddyMark Thank this.
