Are there any upgrades that could be made to older trucks to make them CARB complaint for 2014? Or will all the older trucks be doomed for the junk yard?

What year truck are you talking about?

You can always change the engine or add a particulate filter it all depends on the year.

I was thinking about becoming an O/O, but I didn't want to get into a 5-year lease. I'll be looking at around a 08-10 in model year ranges.

The year time frame should already have a dpf system, it may not have def though

Since you list your location as AL all you need to do is not book loads to CA

Stay away from 08-10 years. They are more headache and difficult to make a profit with. Either 07 or older, or 2012 and newer they seem to have it figured out. I have an 09 and I can't even manage 6 mpg average. Nevermind the constant headaches with the dpf system. It is going to cost me $5-6k to have it removed and then hopefully I will have a truck that gets decent mileage. If I don't go to cali, so be it. There are 47 other states that also need things hauled.

They can't make the DPF filters function properly on trucks that they were OEM on, what makes them think they will function as an afterthought. Not sure its worth spending $10k to retrofit an older truck to get the peanut paying freight that goes into Kalifornia in the first place. Not to mention the fact that KARB likes to change the rules mid game, whose to say those retrofit trucks won't suddenly be made illegal because KARB decided to change the rules again.
