The northbound lanes of the Bishop Ford Freeway will be closed throughout the weekend after the bed of a dump truck slammed into the bottom of a bridge overpass at 115th Street today.
The lanes should be reopened by Monday's rush hour according to Sarah Wilson, a bridge maintenance engineer for IDOT.
The northbound truck hit the overpass around 10:15 a.m., apparently after the load of fine gravel it was carrying began lifting in the dump bed and hit the bottom of the bridge, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. The incident closed the freeway in both directions.
The truck's trailer had not been removed as of 5:30 p.m. because officials feared that debris could fall. The trailer will be removed later tonight, Wilson said.
Currently northbound traffic is being allowed to exit the Bishop Ford Freeway at 115th Street, then reenter on the entrance ramp.
"There was major damage to the structure, [the impact] apparently lifted up the structure and obviously we're very concerned," Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Claffey said.

To lift that bridge like that he had to be going at a good speed when he hit it .... driven that stretch a good amount and alot of those local yocals race down those feeways
Wouldnt be a bit surprised if he was way over the speed limit
-
Ya gotta wonder, what kind of shape that driver is in? Looks like it ripped the bed off the truck. Which means the truck went from X to Y in speed reduction.
That's got to hurt. -
That, my boy, to my somewhat trained eye, is the remains of a frameless or maybe a 1/4 framed dump trailer. I suspect that if the pictures showed it, the rest of the trailer is still securely attached, if somewhat mangled, to the back of the tractor.
As for the speeds, most likely at that time of the morning, the traffic was flowing well and he was running anywhere between 55 (the legal speed limit) and 65 (the unofficial one). His speed really makes little difference in the accident, the question is what happened there and how much time will it take to make the repairs. Luckily, 115th is not a major crossroad, so the local area can susrvive if they have to detour over it for a while.
Because of this accident, I stayed up in Wisconsin last nite and avoided the various Chicago interstates. Then I dropped into town about 11 pm, grabbed my load and departed Chicago and laid over in Indiana at Burns Harbor. This AM, I made my delivery on time and then came home.
