You'll only see trucks built in Texas and Louisiana built with cages like that. The reason for the cages came out of the 50's and 60's when Texas had horrible length laws. The rig movers of the time would have to move big iron with little short bed trucks when they ran into a load they couldn't get they would suck it up as far as they could then throw their line over the top of the cage grab the load down in the middle somewhere and stuff it over top of their cab in order to get it off the ground and move it around. Now we just use really big bed trucks back then a 280 in wb truck was huge now 400 in wb is normal.

Isn't that just a winch tractor though? We have bed trucks up here but you don't seem them pulling drop decks and float trailers around on the road, seems like they are mostly for moving stuff around on location...alot of small winch tractors up here on the roads, just like that one.

That is just a winch tractor but the cages got moved over so that the styling would be the same and trucks would look similar. PA has some real ###### up length and weight laws so that is the reason for no trailers on the bed trucks. I used to drive a 385 inch wheelbase bedtruck and pull a 42 foot three axle lowboy with it empty weight was 90,000 lbs. I usually got to haul the ramp and that was it.
