Recently I was in the final hiring phase with Smith Transportation .
I had collected unemployment from a previous employer not related to the trucking industry and was asked why I had left that company.
Obviously to collect Unemployment in PA one has to be fired first and the Unemployment compensation board has to check with that employer to make sure you were operating within company guidelines.
I was in fact operating in company guidelines and was granted my compensation.
Now this part of the interview is meant to test a persons integrity and I for every intent was being honest with the recruiter who was in earnest trying to help me achieve my goal of working there.
The reason I was fired from a previous company from which I collected unemployment was because of the egg on their faces they got for starting an investigation on me for dubious charges.
( We have all worked with someone who plays the system and is lazy , but will throw you under the bus or try to falsely implicate you into some fireable offence , just because you are working correctly and may bring light to their lazy ways)
Well the charges I was brought up on were found to be not true and I was released because the company was embarrased and didnt know how to face me on a daily basis. They agreed to pay my unemployment wages.
Now.. Here I was trying to be honest with my recruiter and he was really harping on information about my unemployment reasons. ( oh we need that information, oh we need that information...)
So, as I was getting the previous company to fax over my employee records , the recruiter decided he was going to expedite my hiring process and take my case to the top brass.
NOTE HE TOOK IT TO THE TOP.( Thats the owner and management teams.)
They took one look at the reason and denied my employment immediately without further question.
The recruiter called me and told me of their decision.
I told him I guess integrity doesnt count much at Smith Transport. He said Hes sorry but when he trys to get them to listen he gets in trouble.
In the end the moral of this story is this. Lie, cheat and decieve to get your job with Smith Transportation,PA.
And remember as my recruiter said he gets in trouble for presenting viable cases to the higher ups.
That says to me that they dont want to hear you as an employee.
Commitment to Excellence? I dont think so, as I have a clean record and am building on my half million mile goal No problems on my CSA or DAQ report.
but Smith Transportation , Like CR England, Knight, Schneider, JB Hunt, all are out for only one thing... their own pocket..
It is fact they tout all about drivers but that is a huge lie. If you dont believe me the above mentioned are most of the CEOs of the ATA. The very people who are destroying the trucking industry and attempting to regulate it so much so that they can soon control the pay across the board that all truckers recieve. Once this happens the trucker will be recieving minimum wage pay then taxed on it. about 5.65 per hr. is their goal while the excess for years to follow flows straight into their personal bank accounts.
Smith Transportation. not a integrity based hiring practicer.

Sorry to hear your not happy with the lack of integrity and low pay for the truck drivers. Shame on trucking companies for such dubious practices as trying to make a profit. They should truly be ashamed.
On the lighter note...

Purrfect timing .
Think of it as them doing you a favor. Stay positive Every company has it's good side and bad side you got an early glimpse.
Keep trying . -
I always say, once they cut each others throats with rates to the bare minimum of profit margins, it doesn't take an economist to figure out whats the biggest drain on their profits, and the one place left they can cut to ratchet the bottom line back up? Hint. They sit in the seat and are already grossly underpaid, and there's always a line of new folks fresh out of school with stars in their eyes, ready and willing to be taken advantage of when the current ones get tired of the beatdown and leave the compnay..

To somone making 8/hr making 500/week sounds very good to me! That is two weeks of pay for me! My dad said his first year as a truck driver he made 39K which is a WHOLE lot more then I am making now! Put it this way, truck drivers get paid more then police and firefighters.......I was thinking about going and getting my cdl and seeing about smith transport in the future......how often do they get home? And how long are they home for?
-
Believe me, that's not a lot when you break it down to 24/7 your 'at work'. To make good money OTR you have to stay out for 3 weeks. For being away from your family that long, it's not enough pay! But in this economy, it's a good job, with no slowing down. Everything has to be moved! -
If you feel so strongly about this industry and these companies......why are you still applying to them??
-
oops, week old post. Better open my eyes wider lol.

i have 2 problems with this
1) you are not at work for 24/7 you are only alowed to work 14 hours a day and only 11 is driving, because you stay in your truck witch is your home the other hours of the day not your work. if you think of it the other way then you are in the wrong job.
2) we have lots and lots of drivers with our company that are home on weekends and once in a while during the week and make 45k a year, and i have a few that make over 70k a year and do. so your theroy goes out the window. sorrycurtmorehouse Thanks this. -
Derwood, I beg to differ with you...you ARE working 24/7 while you are on the road because the driver is responsible for that equipment at all times. Just because you are not driving or unloading does not mean you are not on the job. As long as the driver is in possession of the equipment, he is working even if he's in the sleeper. One more thing, 45k a year is only $856 a week before taxes. I was making that 20yrs ago. Its a shame the pay for this profession hasn't changed in many years.
Trucail, casc1 and nctrucker1977 Thank this.
