does anyone know anything about what is under the hood of these trucks anymore?
if you dont understand how a jake works go sit on the porch with the CRE almost drivers -
I always use jakes (not in housing area) no greater chance of causing damage because the psi in the cylinder is no greater than when the engine is under load.
-
Jakes or no jakes the fuel mileage will be the same. If it does go up, its cause you changed your driving habit due to not having/using jakes.

I90 EB in MA; long grade downhill. I once reset my roadrelay at the top, gave the throttle a shot of fuel to start the count (had to use some fuel to calculate MPG), and by the time i hit bottom with jake on, the MPG had rolled through 1000 and was still counting up. It had based the entire calculation on the distance travelled and the shot of fuel i used at the top after resetting. Not certain about older mechanicals, but i'm pretty sure most electronic engines cut off the fuel while the engine retarders are on; no need to inject it if you're not producing power. I can't see how using jakes to control speed downhill would affect your fuel economy.

Leave the truck in gear, turn on the Jakes, then turn the engine off.
