I just want to let you guys know about NEXTRAN TRUCK SERVICE CENTER In LAKE CITY,FL which is a Volvo dealership...I had to take my 2007 Volvo into this shop yesterday because I was having an issue with the truck not starting all the time, while I was getting empty about 40 miles away from this shop.. I had called the service manager Phillip and told him the problem that my truck was having and asked if they would have time to get it in the shop yesterday and He said they could look at it as soon as I could get there. I arrived at around 0830 and they wrote up a ticket and put it in the shop and after about 40 minutes the mechanic told me that I had a bad fuel pump and it need to be replaced, So at that time they gave me an estimate on the repairs and I told them to put the new fuel pump on...Once the mechanic put the new fuel pump on and went to start the truck ... it would not start and a mystery arose as to what the new problem was. The mechanic spent all day yesterday trying to find out what the problem was but at 6:30 pm last night He was still unable to find it, and I was frustrated from being there for 10 hours and I was ready to tell him to just put everything back together and I would get it looked at another time.

I could see the mechanic was frustrated because He could not figure out what was wrong, He had spent the whole day eliminating posibilities and wanted to continue working on it until He found the problem, but my concern was the labor charge for all the hours spent on it and all the hours until He could find the problem, So the mechanic called the service manager Phillip at home and told him my concern and the service manager said that no matter how much time would be spent until the problem was found, the dealership would abide by the estimate that I was given earlier in the day and it would cost me no more than the estimate.

So I got a hotel room for the night, went back this morning and by 1130 this morning the mechanic had found the problem and the truck was fixed..So roughly this mechanic had approx. 14 hours labor into the truck and this dealership stood by the estimate and did not try and charge me anything extra....All I can say is very good customer service and these guys are not out to screw somebody over with extra labor charges or repairs...I would very much recommend them to anyone that needs work done on there truck....Hats off to Phillip and this dealership

The mystery problem was a fuse and a relay went bad and it was not getting fuel to the fuel pump to start.

why wasn't the relay and fuse looked at in the first place. was there not an electrical diagnosis done at the pump BEFORE it was replaced.

    SHC and nikmirbre Thank this.

This was my first thought!! Its awesome they stood by the original quote!!!! Does volvo not have a series of tests that they do? They start with the batteries in nearly all diagnosis issues. If your talking about the fuel pump with the spin on filter, if after changing the pump, you can look at the manual pump to see if fuel is getting to it....... only reason i know if because i just recently changed that fuel pump....

I've always wondered why customers have to pay a dealer shop labor time for their techs to poke around trying to find a problem. Especially at a dealership, who are supposed to be experts when it comes to their product. There should be a flat fee for diagnostic time, regardless of how long it takes to isolate the problem. I think it's wrong for the dealership to profit while their incompetent or ignorant technicians are being trained at the customers' expense.

electrical issues can be a nightmare sometimes. but this problem was apparently an easy fix if looked at in the right place to begin with.

other then the time consumption. least he was taken care of pricewise.

I used to own a repair shop and first off most mechanics aren't very good at electrical issues, they'd rather not deal with them.
Secondly, if a guy spent 4 hours trying to diagnose something that should have taken an hour, I charged the customer an hour and no more.
Any ignition or fuel delivery problem shouldn't be that hard, driveability and intermittant stuff is harder.
Probably a junior guy at the shop, maybe the lube tech just got promoted.

Yes there was an electircal diagnosis done at the pump and it was not getting enough voltage to the pump.....and my fuel pump was bad so it did need to be replaced , either there or on the side of the road because it would have went out.....When you turn the key on in a volvo and you listen by the fuel pump you will be able to hear something like a humming noise if the pump is functioning properly and the correct voltage is making to the pump.
The old fuel pump did not have that noise and they took the old pump off and tested it and it was bad.

I do not know the answer as to why the relay and fuse where not looked at in the first place....all I can tell you is that my ignition switch was taken out and checked and all the wires going from it, He traced from the fuse box under the dash and He checked the lines from the batteries...It took him about an hour to put my truck back together from all the stuff that was checked out.
