My tripac runs rough and sometimes dies on first start up. If it dies it usually sets the eng code. After the first start up it works just fine for the rest of the break. Any ideas on what the problem could likely be?

My tri pac did that when was last time inline fuel filter was changed?. depending on what trk and which dealer installed it it could be any where outside apu housing?. Also be sure you don't have a fuel line or fitting leaking on suction side of fuel system. Could cause apu to lose prime and since it's not on pressurized side of system won't show as a leak. Also Glow plugs if 1 or both are not operating correctly won't preheat and cause this. I have also had this problem and had to deal with the faults I described. Also check your oil psi sending unit it's a Normally open switch until psi builds then it closes and tells the engine module you have oil psi. if there is sludge or something on sensor could give false reading. But more likely fuel related. Love my Tri Pak it has 28,000 hrs and still doing a fine job. Hope this helps

Bought the tripac used with 2800 hours. All the filters have been changed within the last 300 hours. Its on a 670 Volvo and they relocated the inline fuel filter for easier access. My first thought was glow plugs. Any idea where the fuel pump is, and how much pressure it should put out?

Look very closely at the 2 plastic lines that go from the filter to the injector pump. I had one rub through, and since this is a suction line, did not actually leak much, but the unit would stumble and occasionally stall when the AC compressor kicked on the first time. Restarting the unit it would always then run fine.

my shop mechanic showed me you have to be very careful changing the inline fuel filter
or the line gets pinched causing hard starts and fuel pump like symptoms
he services all 1500 tripacs for Transam and says that is the number one problem
    when serviced elsewhere

I did some troubleshooting. The inline filter was clogged. Changed it out. It helped a lot. It usually still dies after first start up. But it does run a lot smoother. I suppose I will check all the lines for kinks and replace the seperator again.

When I get home I'm gonna try to find a bigger in-line filter at the parts store to adapt to it. Hopefully a bigger filter wont clog as fast and be cheaper to boot.

Update: I did some troubleshooting. I took the fuel pump outlet line off at the inlet to the fuel/water separator filter base. It was barely pumping any fuel. I had already priced a fuel pump through the company I'm leased to. Even getting it at cost it was over $150.00. The exact same cheap junk pump (minus the wiring connector) is all over ebay for 25 to 30 bucks. Theres no way I was gonna put another one of those pieces of junk on there. So I did some research and found a high quality pump at Napa made by Carter/Federal Mogul for about 70 bucks. The part #for the pump is P4070. It comes with a bracket and mounting hardware. I had to drill a couple extra holes in the bracket to gain clearance for the flywheel. Also had to intall 1/4 to 1/8 inch pipe bushings in the pump to match the existing fittings. I cut the wiring harness off the old pump and soldered it to the wires on the new pump. It was a little extra work but it will be worth it to have a high quality and reliable pump.
