For those of you that remember me, I'm back.

After trying to run a truck on my own and realizing it was going to take a larger time commitment than I was willing to put in what with a family and all. Plus health insurance is huge with my fiancee having several pre existing health conditions that would disqualify her from any health insurance other than company sponsored (once we get married health insurance from her ex stops). So I have been looking at other jobs and now have not one but two prospects asking for interviews...apparently even with only 14 months otr experience it seems I am desirable because I have a clean psp/mvr/criminal record, both companies sounded eager on the phone. Now I just have to decide which I want.

First is Smith Transport. They are based in Roaring Spring, PA which is about 10 miles from where I live. I would be driving daycab on short haul from bedford, pa to the Harrisburg, Baltimore, Philly area. Home 2-3 nights a week and every weekend. 1,800 - 2,200 miles a week starting at 34cpm. I'm going to find out how their payscale works because that rate with those miles seems a little low to me. Also their insurance is kind of jankey, it's real insurance but you pay 30% of prescription costs...that can be rough when a script is $300+/month. Also I was more hoping for hourly work rather than cpm. On the bright side no more sleeping in a 4x8 at a truck stop and peeing in bottles (I dumped them in the toilet).

Next is Imlers Poultry. They are a local company based right here in town. I would be driving reefer and delivering to customers. Currently that's all I know other than it's hourly pay. I've never hauled reefer so that will be new. Still need a lot of info on this one. I'm guessing I would be unloading product at the customers. I'll find out more at the interview.

One thing I am curious about. This is the first time I have had 2 companies competing for my employment. Should I use some of the broker negotiating I learned and let them know other companies are looking to hire me as well, or would they not even care? Because bottom line I want what's best for my family, which is the best pay and benefits for my time away from them.

The job I really wanted was to drive for Sheetz. My fiancee worked in their store for 8 years and her twin sister has worked in the company help center for 20 years and the benefits and bonuses are outstanding, plus they actually care for their workers (my fiancee was just a store clerk and they worked her schedule around the care she had to provide for her multihandicapped son, not a lot of places will do that). Unfortunately they require 3 years verifiable experience before they will even take an application.

Bottom line is after 2 months sitting at home going stir crazy it looke like one way or another I will be back behind the wheel soon. I miss it bad.

    Cheers!

The Challenger, SHC, Hitman and 2 others Thank this.

Don't push your luck. Go with the one who seems to provide the best fit for you and your needs, desires, wants, and expectations. Companies in this economy don't have to bid for employees in the beginning. If they see a quality worker who fits in well they may rapidly increase your pay to keep you from looking elsewhere, but in the beginning, from their perspective, they probably have other options that may or may not work out as well as you.

Having said that, some smaller outfits mayne could offer an accelerated option to go onto their health plan but don't tell them you want that or they may worry that you and your wife are going to be a drag on their employee health pool.

I switched companies about 6 mos. ago because I couldn't take running the 48 any more and wanted regional. There were 2 companies wanting me, I liked both of them. One was offering me 6% more. The other company matched it, threw in some incentives, etc and I went with them. It was a good choice.

Interesting that you posted that doing the 0/0- L/0 gig didn't work out for you. Several of us had that very discussion today over on the Ask an Owner Operator thread.

Hope everything works out for you.

You really have to compare what each one offers, and go with the one that seems to suit your needs the most. I understand completely when it comes to pre-existing health conditions, and how hard it is to get coverage for any pre-existing conditions. It is hard to be away from someone you love with health conditions, so I suggest that you both compare what each company offers and choose the one that is best for the both of you.

you only get one chance to negotiate from in front. you can go in and negotiate pay every couple years or so after you get hired, but then they hold all the cards.

Not sure if the Smith Transport is the same one from Indiana?? Black trucks with gold lettering.... If so, steer clear. My cousin got a job with them running a daycab from Indy to Chicago. The miles were low and they actually wanted him to sleep in the truck when he got stuck somewhere!!! He left there ASAP and went elsewhere.
