well i dont know where you worked 20 years ago but i was only making 22cpm times 120k thats 26,400 so i am guessing you had one of those special jobs that payed you more then most drivers. when i started in 1982 i was making 15 cpm or 18k a year, now i make 70k a year so i dont know how your math works but mine says i am making a lot more money in gross then when i started. and lets see minumum wage is 7.80 or something an hour times 40 hours a week times 52 weeks a year equals 16k or 17k a year so in my book 45k a year is a lot better. well in my world anyways, and we will agree to dissagree on the other thing![]()

I'm not trying to bust you butt derwood but 45k a year is not descent money to spend a lot of time away from home and 20 yrs ago I did not work for a big company. I got paid to run, and run I did. East coast to west and back to Hunts Point. I'll have 40k this year driving a triax and I'm home everyday. 45k for running the road is not that good. 70k for you is excellent, glad to hear it, but I believe everyone should be making a lot more than 45k. You know as much as I do that the pay in this industry is not following along with the cost of living. Be safe and keep the wheels rolling.

I work for a company like Smith Transport....i go out for 14 to 15 days,, and im home for 48 ish hours im doing about 45,000 a year.. as for the 24/7 job...its how you spend your time...If i was home I would be riding my bike... so i have my bike with me.. on the road is no different for me I also get to sight see alot...... more than if was at "home" everynight......so I am NOT on the job 24/7...

If you have the boss's truck anywhere in the country, regardless of what you do on you're off time, you are still on the job. We don't get paid for all the time spent away from our home, but you are still responsible for the equipment 24/7. Just sayin'.

If "being responsible" for someone else's equipment means you're "on the job" and "working", doesn't it follow that the owner of the trucking company works 24/7 x 365 since he or she is "responsible" for the company? A lot of people, truckers and otherwise, don't think about what management is responsible for, only what difficulties they personally have to deal with. Here's just one example, and I don't mean to pick a fight or say mgmt is better, just pointing out the other side....
Let's say a company has 100 employees on it's health insurance plan. The average driver has two dependents on their insurance. That means that mgmt is "responsible" for the healthcare of 300 people. If he or she causes the company to fail, so does the health insurance and all 300 people who depend on that company's success will be looking for income and insurance at the same time. Not saying that one is more important than the other, but next time you think how tough it is to make sure your truck is secure while it's parked at home during your home time, think about the boss who has the weight of 100 families depending on him. -
I agree with you 100% Curt. No argument here. A lot of companies and drivers have lost that personal outlook. I'm glad to see that someone still has an excellent attitude. We all have to survive together or we go down as one. Too bad most companies think we are expendable and treat us as such. I have read a couple of your posts lately and owners like you, with your honesty, are very hard to find anymore.
