Hello everyone, this might seem like a silly question to you experienced guys, but, this is all new to me, so please be kind.

I just bought an '01 Freightliner Columbia. I have to replace the starting batteries (truck won't start if sitting for more than two days). I have found a battery box between the frame rails which has 4 batteries in it. From what I've read in an online owners manual, those 4 are for the bunk heater/air. It says these are separate from the starting batteries.

Well, I cannot for the life of me, see another battery box for the starting batteries! Are they hidden somewhere, or, is there only 4 batteries for everything?

I have not worked on Freightliners much but if you found 4 group 31 batteries I would say they are the ones you are looking for. Was this battery box behind the cab? You could follow the heavy red cable from your starter and that will lead you to them also.

Hi MadDog, yeah the battery box is behind the cab between the frame rails. I did see the red cable from the starter lead to the battery box. It's just confusing me where the manual says the 4 bunk heater batteries are separate from the starting batteries.

Would it be safe to assume different trucks are setup for batteries differently. I guess a daycab would not need 4 batteries since no bunk heater.

Has anyone ever seen a Columbia with more than 4 batteries?

Yes.If you have a truck with electric apu for a/c and heat it will have 8 batteries.4 behind cab and 4 more under left step for starting.most Columbias and Century models with only the 4 batteries have them mounted behind the cab between the frame.

Hi peterd, I know for sure there is no battery box anywhere on the left side, there's only the fuel tank mounted under the fairings.

Another question, when I shop for new batteries, what size should I get - group 31 like MadDog said? Do I have to buy deep-cycle, or, will regular commercial grade batteries be fine? Like I said, it has a battery powered bunk heater.

Virtually all of the batteries sold in the US are US made. Just only a few outfit doing it. Deka / East Penn, Exide, and Johnson Controls. They make everything for everyone. Napa is made by Johnson Controls, who also makes Interstate. Deka makes everything from name brand batteries from O'Reilly's auto parts, AC Delco, to Caterpiller. I have lost track on Exide batteries, but I do remember the Sears brand are Exide. I used to haul a lot of batteries or battery components and it was amazing to see what brand labels were coming out on the completed end of things.

Surprisingly enough, I have had excellent results with "on sale" batteries at the OEM truck dealers! Have held up about as good as any name brand.

usually there are two positive wires and two negative wires from right and left battry banks, but.... they are bolted together negative to negative and positive to positive under hood and connection may be corroded.

If you cant start truck after sitting more two days cell in one battery is bad and one battery drain other, so disconnect all batteries and find faulty one with DVOM after truck sat for 3-5 days, but anyway it is recomended to change all four batteries

The new absorbed glass mat batteries work really well. They are designed to deep cycle and hold their charge. We use them in our trucks with the electric a/c's.They are more expensive but most have a 3 yr replacement warranty. We hardly ever pay for batteries anymore.

Id go with agm for everything. They handle being drained to far much better then "starter" batteries. They don't have as much CCA, but come on, you have 4 of them. If you use them for just starting, starter batts are fine. Most of us use our cigarette lighters for stuff, leave our gps plugged in, run lights etc. after the truck is off. These all put small drains on starter batts which is not what they are designed for. When the truck is off, is EVERYTHING powered by the aux bats for heating and cooling? If so starter batts would be ok, if not AGM will handle the small "hotel" loads better.
