I usually go to the TA for my oil changes and have my oil samples processed by them (they mail them off) but I see that Speedco does "on-site" readings. Are they any good and have any of you used them??

Do they NOT give readings of certain things??

i quit using speedco oil samples because the kids that work there dont clean the machine correctly. i have gotten alot of false readings. i use autozone you can buy the kit for $10 or around that and they will send it off to a lab.

I am sure you can run into a Speedco that doesn't do a good job on doing a sample. Since I use a bypass filter, when I change it, I will pull a quick sample and have it checked. I use Speedco quite a bit for this. I will do mail in version when I drop the oil. The samples match up between ones mailed in and samples I have done at Speedco. They will tell you all the information you generally need... TBN, Soot level, Nitration, wear metals, add pack component numbers like moly, fuel dilution, water, glycol, viscosity, etc.

I buy a kit from CAT cost $13.47 with outrageous TN sales tax of 9.75%. It comes with a pre-paid postage envelope just fill the small sample bottle with oil, fill out the label and stick it on, seal up in the envelope and drop in the mail. Email my local CAT for results. Started doing this after the overhaul. Cheap insurance on an expensive rebuild and CAT will have un-deniable documentation that I'm doing what I need to do to keep the motor up and not deny warranty. Sounds like this is competitive with truck stop chains. I've seen the lab where they analyze oil samples at Thompson CAT in La Vergne, TN from the looks of things it's a specialist who does this all day long not some punk kid fresh out of technical school who might not clean the machine properly.

That is very competitive. Sounds like a good deal. If it is giving you what you need, then by all means stick with it!

Yeah, I was just wondering how good their on-site testing was. I have no problem doing the mail-in thing but figured if I could get it done while I waited then I might as well ya know.

Ive been using Mobil testing (thru T/A) and also used Titan (thru Boss Shops) and all the readings have come back basically the same everytime, perfect oil with no high numbers of anything. Which isn't bad for a motor with 827k miles
