Getting a job in trucking is super easy provided you have a clean MVR (no more than 1.5 pts in california), somebody who can vouch for you and what you've done the past three years (employer, friends, family), you're semi healthy (blood pressure of 140/90 or less. meds are acceptable to lower) and you don't have any felonies in the last 7 years. Companies like Swift and CRST rarely, if ever, care about the school you graduated from, just as long as your CDL is valid and your MVR is decent. Picky-er companies may want an "acceptable" school or require refreshers but these are usually companies that require transportation experience anyway so expect to start at the bottom no matter what. My uncle is in his 50's and hes considering a career in trucking. My former trainer is in his 50s and makes a killing as an O/O. Theres really no age discrimination here as they need all the qualified people they can get on these roads...

I'm 56 and decided to start this new career in trucking as well. Having recently graduated from trucking school and waiting on a start date from Roehl, I am excited about becoming a rookie!

There were a lot of guys in my CDL school around my age so I was not alone in the quest for a second career. Each had their own reasons for pursuing a career. I personally have always wanted to drive big rig and love the challenge of this profession. Good luck to you Six9, it is difficult to compete in a young persons field, but your age is not a hindrance and life experience is a plus!

I would imagine that many truck drivers like to be all by their lonesome selves. Even with E-Logs, cameras, satellites, tight schedules, etc., a truck driver does not have another person constantly looking over their shoulder, unless there is a trainer or supervisor inside the truck with them.

Six9GS: Lots of old techies out on the highway, I'm retired IBM. My whole life I worked solo with my bosses hundreds of miles away, I like that way of life. I drove 50K miles a year fixing crap and putting up with customers BS, trucking is the next natural step.

I am a 55yr old grandmother, got my CDL 2 years ago. As I have told so many of the people I have talked to, if I can do it, almost anyone can!! As for the sleepapnea, the doctor doing your physical will probably want to check your records, but it should be no problem.
