Actually you can set the backlash by removing the idler gear. There is a hole in the hub which also should align with the hole in the front plate. I used a 3406 injection pump timing pin and put it in the hole while tightening all of the bolts and nuts that hold the hub on to set backlash. This is the quick way

have you run cats before? i grew up on cats and then switched to detroits for about 7years. when i bought this acert i thought it would blow up the first time i drove it. they rattle, clatter and ping. lol. i have a metalic ping or clatter sound from the front end of the motor.

This method is for an E Model, but the B Model timing pin sets the backlash perfectly when inserted in the hole of the hub.

Could be squirrels after the peanuts behind the peanut cover.

CATS are notorious for having a front gear train noise if the gear hub backlash is not set. Anytime the gear hubs are removed they must be preset.
