One of my sons didn't spell very well, but he says, and I have found it to be true, that the first and last letter of a syllable or word need to be right in order to get the right meaning and nothing else really matters.
Both of my sons are graduates of engineering school but the one that did better at spelling did better at school, too.
On another note, the Czechs were notorious for leaving out vowels from words and especially names. Just fill in the right vowel sound to fit the consonant sounds.
I also do well at reading almost anything, better than hearing some of it.![]()

If a person can gently bring to someone's attention that they're misusing a word repeatedly like 3 times in one sentence , how is that contempt ? I can understand you guys slamming a door on someone being brutal to others because they make a simple mistake , or abbreviate something wrongly. But lets face it , there may be folks here trying to learn the English language , and recently I spoke on the poly forum respectfully in a general fashion to please do your best at helping us to not look uneducated , and tried to help someone understand the difference between using the word there for their 3 times in one sentence. I did not reply directly to his post nor did I signal him out , by referring directly to him.
Flatbed alerted me to that it's a NO NO here. I been here quite a while now , the guy above has a problem and that is , why would anyone waste their time trying to decipher a post that of the one he described above , and therefore I can understand your reply sir.
There are ways of trying to help someone without sounding too critical or being outright mean about it. What's wrong with furthering your education other than some people just don't like corrective criticism no matter the nature of it's intent. I used to use the word Fairing as in comparison to how some holds his or her own to someone else , when one day on another forum I was not so gently corrected by someone , I didn't let it cloud the fact that I been mistakenly using the word , and Faring is the proper use of the word for such a statement. I became a little more educated that day , and now can use that word correctly.
Not everyone has to be down right nasty when attempting to help someone , and I'd only go that route once. You may get a simple thank you , you might get a sarcastic okay Mr Know-it-all. You don't however continue to teach someone uninterested. It can be done smartly , but it doesn't seem you're interested in giving us the benefit of the doubt anymore than the companies and customers we deal with . Just my humble opinion , I'm not trying to open a can of worms here. -
Uh believe this or not , but being able to write so it's well perceived is something I was taught to take pride in. There is illiteracy in this country , that will worsen by ignoring the fact it exists.
But there's a place and time for trying to help someone , and then you have to choose your words smartly not to offend that person.
What's wrong with accepting gentle corrective criticism and learning even at 50 something yrs old. Or gently trying to help someone ?
There is a vast array of people in trucking , some still learning the language here , and could actually learn from those that periodically can help others with the use of certain words , it's not an easy language , and no one remembers everything they learned from 40 yrs ago.
No I'm not talking about OCD when it comes to correcting people , but there are those occasions that you might feel you want to try to help someone. -
You may have the best of intentions, but the vast majority of us humans don't appreciate having our grammar corrected. 'Helping' people 'further their education' is a very effective way of either embarrassing them, making them angry, and/or making everyone else in the thread angry. It looks snotty, no matter how 'gently' it's done.
If someone asks for your help correcting their grammar or spelling, go for it. Otherwise, use your good manners and keep your advice to yourself. -
So much for reasonable as I said , after like 3 yrs it was the 1st for me doing that. Somehow I'm left with the impression you know snotty a lot better than I . Good day Sir
