At the j in winnemuca, and a BT parked next to me. During my pre trip, I noticed that he's running singles on the drives... Let me go into detail. Dual drives, set up for dual tires/wheels, yet he is running a single tire/wheel at each end of each drive. Clearly set up to run duels.

Ive never seen this before, and I imagine that if DOT noticed, he'd be shut down until he came up with 4 more tires/wheels. Am I right? Or is this actually legal? And if it is legal, is it safe? I did snap a pic, but can't manage to upload it from my iPhone.

No reason to get shut down for that as long as the lugnuts hold the tire against the drum. Don't see anything illegal with it, seen it often.

I find that really hard to believe! So, if I rolled through a coop, and got shut down for having 4 bad tires on my tractor, I could simply remove the 4 bad tire/wheel combos and swap the 4 good tires to each end of each axle, and DOT would let me roll on out? I think not, but I am no veteran.

I've seen units doing mostly "around the corner work, or local work" running that setup. They don't usually have to deal with much weight.

Why not, what rule or law would you be violating? There's no rule that says you have to run duals on a class 8 bobtail.

As long as you are not exceeding the weight limit of the the tire, I don't see any issue.

Exactly....each tire has a load capacity. If you don't exceed the limit it's all good BUT !!

All you could do is bobtail. An empty would put you over.

In the state that I'm in you get 600 pounds per inch of tire width. On the tandem drive axles with singled out 10" wide tires, that would be 24,000 pounds.

Thinkin about it more, I guess it isn't any different than running super singles, it's just looks awkward as all get out seein' 4 drums sittin out there in the open next to a skinny tire! Thanks for the input, guys!
